My 'finished' pond

I have sore fingertips from handling each rock a dozen times, but the filter is now more or less hidden so I'm well pleased with the results of my labours over the past month or so. Thanks to everyone for giving me such good advice!

Vicki, There are many filter systems used by ponders but keep in mind it is a system. Since it is a run off pond with rocks on the bottom I don't think you have a bottom drain. So that in itself means eventually you will have to vaccuum the pond or drain and pump out the mulm and clay that accumulates under the rocks. Most people with rock lined ponds do that yearly. Pond skimmers will help keep the surface debris from eventually ending up in those rocks. Bead filters and pressure filters usually require a prefilter before them, and you must frequently flush them wich requires a lot of water. May not be a bad option if you install a skimmer and use it after the skimmer. But you must commit to those flushes. Your pond is twice the size of mine. How deep is it? What are the dimensions. If it was my pond and the theme was more natural vs crystal clear here is what I might do. I might just use two large skimmers and take them to skippy filters. I don't think I would retrofit a bottom drain due to the clay. So I would do a yearly clean out. If the clay was not that big of a deal I would retrofit a BD to a settling pond or chamber and take that to a skippy. Others with better ideas will chime in soon. Regards, Lisa

Thanks for all the kind words! The 'original' pond was about 9' long, and 5' wide. The expansion has increased the size to 14' long and 9' wide. Depth is about the same at 22" deep. Here are some pictures of the smaller pond. FYI the water iris and lilly pads are free growing. I secured the lilly down with a few pieces of rock, but otherwise they are unpotted and usoiled. Not sure how they have survived for the last 4 years, but I've had to split them 3 times. I never remove any of my water plants in the winter. Frog by the pond. Bee on the flowers Digging the expansion out (by hand!) Before I put the finishing touches around the new pond (flowers and edging river pebbles)

Like Sandy said....get a test kit and check your water first. If all checks out, then you can add a couple of small fish. The filter will take about 6 weeks to cycle. Until that time, keep an eye on your ammonia levels and nitrites. Do not add salt unless your nitrites go up, then salt is necessary to protect the fish from Brown Blood Disease. Do not add any other "magic pond potion" that promises clean water and no bottled bacteria. If your pond is healthy and clean, you do not need bottled potions or chemicals (with the exception of dechlor). With 700 gallons, you are better off sticking to goldfish and not getting koi. Koi need a minimum of 250-300 gallons each, with a minimum pond size of 1000 gallons. 500 gallons each is much better for them. Koi get VERY large and it's just unfair to keep them in small ponds. Goldies will do much better and come in a nice variety of colors. In your zone, you could even keep fancy goldies like orandas and ryukins.

Tricia... you've done a brilliant job. The beach / cobble area and rocks are pretty. You did well to disguise the filter. Looks like summer in your pond already - one of the many benefits of living in beautiful Devon!!!

What is the plant directly behind the thin pole?

Thanks for the compliments. The plant behind the birdfeeder pole, Kazzie, is a Hydrangea macrophylla, probably 'Amethyst'. It's also known as the mophead hydrangea, has very large deep green leaves and really huge, dinner plate size blooms. I can post pictures come July/August.

It's super Trish. It looks very invting, and the rocks are smashing. I can recall sore fingertips from arranging rockery ... it's such an art to place them 'just so'. It all looks smashing. Hopefully uypou can sit back now and do the most important thing.. enjoy it.

Tricia... I would love to see pics of your plant in bloom this summer. Acid soil needed I guess (sigh)!
