I have never been a receiver of the gift vouchers, however I can understand your complaint.

It is sad that Angus and Robertson in Australia seems to be having big troubles, it seems that online purchasing is killing the bookshop trade.

We had four Borders stores. Two are closing, and two are remaining open. I'm one of those who felt bad toward them initially because they bought out our best independent bookstore. It had two branches, and those are the two Borders remaining open.

I don't know which stores are closing, but I went to Borders today at the mall and all the display cases had signs on them that said "fixtures are not for sale." I guess that's a pretty good indicator that the store is closing. I have two other Borders closer to home and I will be very sorry if they both close. I use them frequently. Our local Barnes & Noble also closed.

I can only think of one independent book store near me. I don't use it because parking is just impossible there.

I keep thinking of the movie "You've Got Mail" and the little children's bookstore "The Shop Around the Corner" that was consumed by the big bad Fox Books (Borders in disguise).

I am one of I hope many who prefer real books to the electronic variety.
I cannot warm up to a neat little metal object with movable screen which displays a book, page by page.

I haven't heard yet if our Borders is closing-it is about 20 min. away. We have no indep. book shops in the area anymore and if my Borders closes I can drive over 30 min. to Barnes and Noble or go online. I go to the library a lot but always love a good browsing (and usually buying) trip to the bookstore. I will never use an e-reader. It is sad

Here is a list you can check to see if your local store is closing. We're losing several, keeping several others.

I understand they are in very bad shape. They own Waldenbooks, too. I have not heard if any Waldenbooks are closing. You mostly find them in airports these days. Waldens has gone through half a dozen changes of ownership over the years.

I myself buy books from Amazon, big chains, and independents. And I am buying just as many print books as I did before I bought my Kindle.

The book shop problems are universal. Our local newspaper writes today that the largest book shop in Uppsala forces its employees to reduce their working hours by 20% and their pay will be decreased accordingly, of course. It seems too few people buy books in the morning so the shop is overstaffed then. I feel guilty because since I moved out of the city I buy my books on line, any time of day or night.

My favourite independent bookshop here in Reykjavik has gone bankrupt, which leaves only one indie bookshop in the city that's worth visiting. Its name was an old one, both in book-selling and publishing, although another publishing company now owns the imprint.

It was chosen as one of the world's 12 best book stores by a Danish newspaper a couple of years ago, and while I don't concur with that opinion, I still think it was pretty great. It was a place where you could go in and browse for hours, and then sit down in the cafe with a book or a magazine and sip your coffee or enjoy a light meal.

Yes, I noticed that, Netla. Any time I use any punctuation other than the very basic a lot of peculiar characters result. And that's in English!

Probably something broke during a past software update, and they decided not to go to the expense of fixing it.
