I have been reading with interest because this will be my first year. I posted the below on the container forum but haven't heard anything....in the off chance someone on this forum could answer, I'm posting here. I grow a lot of my veggies in containers, but use this forum way more than that one. "I've been growing vegetables for about 8 years and have been really wanting to grow asparagus. Because I rent and have limited space, I have been able to control myself and have not planted it. But I was ordering some other stuff and the deal was too good, so I broke down and bought some. So, even though I might be able to find some space in the ground, I would prefer to plant in a container. I searched for info on growing asparagus in a container, but only found a couple hits. Has anyone here done this? I know they need a deep trench, but I seem to have narrow and deep containers, or wide and shallow ones. What type of container (short of a half barrel) might give me my best shot at some success. Even if it is just a few spears (three years from now!!!)"

Catherinet makes a good point - caps can be easier to read when someone has vision issues. Many plant stems will continue to grow after cutting. And you can most certainly grow new green onions from the cut-off ends if there are still roots attached. I've done it myself. That's how I got my lemongrass, years ago. I also grew a cabbage plant from a store bought head that had roots sprouting from the base. I cut out the core, planted it in a container, put it on a sunny windowsill, and it put out new leaves - no heading tho. I've also done the same with celery. If there's enough of the root 'plate' still attached, and it's fairly fresh, it can put out roots and grow. Here's what the cabbage looked like. Unfortunately, it died off after I transplanted it outside - I think because it was too hot and humid.

Wow leeks sure are expensive. I always grow my own. Started from seed indoors and transplant out. I grow 'Lincoln' and 'Lancelot'. I thought both were very easy to grow. I started so many seeds that I gave about 50 transplants away in May. I have all the Lincoln picked but still have 2 rows of Lancelot left in the garden. With our warm autumn this year, I hope to keep them outside for 2 more weeks here in SE WI. My advise for those prices is to grow your own! They make wonderful leek & potato soup. Although cock-a-leekie soup is my absolute favorite way to use leeks. Creamed leeks are great too. Leek quiche? Sounds yummy. I suppose I should try freezing some of the crop for use in soups/stews but so far I find I can store them in the refrigerator for up to 3 weeks after picking them. Usually I share a lot with friends who do not have room for a garden.

The fronds as you call them are root growers that usually come along near the end of the harvest season. Leave these alone, anything smaller than a lead pencil or 1/2 inch in diameter should be left to grow. It normally takes 2-3 years for harvestable spears to appear, If you do get spears of 1/2 to 3/4 inch size go ahead and cut them no harm done.
