hi i was just wondering if any one knows how to dig up grass trees as we have just bought some land and r going to start building and do not want to destroy any of them

if you could tell us any think at all cos we have heard they r very hard to move thank you

hey laura if you scroll through some of the past postings
here you will see a lot of the same question posted

but to answer your Q
you really cant move them cause the just keel over and die
but if u did wanna try you will have to make sure that you dig quite substantial amout of earth with the tree to protect the roots

Hi Laura, talk to your local Enviro, Forestry or Landcare Group. There are ways to do it - but there could be losses. We were able to move some (with permission) from a proposed development site and had 100% success rate. Jane

Hi, I don't currently have any boab but might have other things (or plants) that would interest you. Firstly what area are you in Qld - tropical or semi, dry or wet. Secondly in broad terms are you interested in natives or exotics or both, thirdly are you restricted in size - I mean are you acreage or residential plot and do you have a preference for planting our or growing potted specimens Fourthly what do you mean by "Parrot Tree" as that could be a number of things. Good for your friend who has the the patience to grow this from seed because it is a slow grower. But this plant is worth it. Its definitely not a grass. It comes from a family that includes aloes, haworthias, daylilies, red hot pokers, phormiums. I don't know if succulent is a good descriptive name,. but in the absence of anything better, why not....:-)

One of Toowoomba's most significant trees is a Xanthorrhoea glauca (white grasstree)(ex Xanthorrhoea australis) which was apparently transplanted here in the 1920s. It's said to have been done with a bullock dray and a crane, bringing the plant in from Cambooya. Someone with claims to expertise has estimated the present age of the tree at 1500 years, based on the number of crowns. So it can be done! If you're ever in town do have a look at it. It's in the front yard of what is now a vet's surgery, corner of two easy-to-find streets, West and Herries.
