Filled my pond with surface water, how can I filter and clean it

Your pond sounds about 1500-2000 gallons. One way to figure out true capacity is measure how long your tap+ hose takes to fill a 3 or 5 gallon bucket and then how long it takes to fill the pond. You should be able to do the math. Best thing to do is pump out this water, clean the remaining silt out, set up a submersible pump in a prefilter going to a skippy or other biofilter that feeds a waterfall. Refill, get filter going, buy some waterlilies and some other plants good for your climate, pot them and place into pond. After about a week, put in some cheap goldfish. If after a year, you have kept them alive and have discovered if local predators (birds, coons, ...) don't snack on them, you can go for more expensive goldfish. Your pond is too small for koi. You can get a submersible pump that also has a fountain attachment or a separate fountain pump. My pond (1500 gallons) is pretty low maintenance and is set up the way I describe above with goldfish and rosy reds, waterlilies, and several types of marginals + parrot's feather.

I built a 500ish gallon pond this past spring. Had the same grayish water in the beginning-partially due to heavy rain splashing in dirt (mulch or gravel will stop that.) Combination of settling and mechanical filtering with a mini skippy filter stuffed with polyester pillow stuffing cleared the water in less than a week. I then used a shop vac with bristle fitting to get the dirt off the bottom. The pond looked good for about a week until warming temps set off an algal bloom turning the water to pea soup. I stopped feeding the 5 goldfish, got more plants both in pond and in skippy, washed the polyester stuffing again, and waited. Couple of weeks later, my water was crystal clear-most of the clearing occuring in the last few days. I didn't add any chemicals (not even barley straw) because I found in my indoor aquarium they were tricky to use and could even complicate problems. I did monitor the pond's pH-keeping it around 7.2-7.4. Algae seem to outcompete plants at higher pHs. I'm lucky that I can access my acidic well water before and after softening and can adjust pH by mixing the two water sources. Pond water continues to be clear and fish are healthy.

Hi, No you can't overdose your pond with bacteria. Every spring I at least triple the recommended dose in the ponds I open for my clients. However, the bacteria does need a media to grow on. If you have a stream with gravel, the bacteria will grow on the gravel. It will also grow on the quilt batting you're using, but every time you rinse it with water from your hose (if you have chlorinated city water) you kill the bacteria. You need to move at least half the volume of your pond through a biological filter for it to work, so if your pump is small, it's not going to filter the water. A UV light will kill your green water (floating algae). You need one sized right with your pond and pump. If the existing pump if the right flow for the pond and UV, then you can use that one. I can put together a price for you for a setup that will work with your pond if you want. I'd need a little more information from you first. Are you using the Aquascape filter system too? What size pump? How is it set up? Do you have any pictures I can see so I can tell if it's laid out right? I'll check back here, but you can also email me directly at amazingaquascapes at yahoo dot com. (I wrote it like that so the spam robots can't see it.) Good Luck, Derreck

Can you ask the dealer where you bought the spa? And spa manual? We do not use the same sanitizing system that you do, so I have no suggestions (went with our dealer's suggestion). The water stays wonderful for many months and is easy to maintain. I've read that if you choose to change sanitizing systems there are extra steps involved other than simply draining.

hi mickys. not an "expert" and not familiar with green genies but does it not have an overflow fitted to return to pond in the event of blocking? a simple "T" return fitted would prevent a reocurrance. ie failsafe. its a green genie 2000 you said? if the ponds in full sun that should be halved, if you have a fairly heavy stocking level (plants and fish, frogs etc) halved again leaving the filter capable of maintaining 500 gals. (if the manfacturers claims are realistic). the pump is supposed to be able to recycle the volume of the pond in 1-2 hrs if the present one can do this i wouldnt upgrade as i think the extra dwell time in the filter may be benificial. how big is the pond? hope this is of help o/

hmm just a thought? are the pump and filter figures you quoted actually gallons? or litres? my old pond was a similar size to your own and i ran a filter which was capable of handling a pond of 4500 ltrs and a 3000ltr an hour pump. which allowing for pumping losses shifted the volume of the pond through the filter approx every hour. all stayed clear. if the figures are gallons the setup should in theory work fine but if its litres it may be a little lacking on a pond that size? regards o/

if you check out the tables here it is litres d:( so is marginal on a pond that size even if shaded with light stocking levels. o/

My pond is a similar size (a few gallons smaller). When I originally set it up the LFS recomended a Green Genie 6000. As I knew I would be able hide it, and working on the "can't over filter a pond" principle, I went for the 12000 with an Aquamax 3500. This keeps my pond clear all year. I'm glad I did this as although I started with 4 fish I counted 46 today !!
I guess what I am saying is I think a 2000 is too small, but that is just my opinion.

i agree ill invest in a bigger filter i will go for a 3000 ltr instead of this 2000 ltr

hi mickys would say at the least the 6000? imho as ret said you "cant" over filter a pond and i think a 3000 may still struggle! good luck o/
