My Correa 'Dusky Bells' has brown leaves...

I bought a Correa "Dusky Bells" from the nursery. Some of the leaves were brown on the edges. I have planted this in a large pot. It seems to be growing very well - it has only been in the pot for about three or four weeks. The plant has plenty of new growth on it but even some of the new growth has turned brown.

It gets the morning sun for a few hours but no hot afternoon sun.

I planted it in native potting mix with slow release native fertiliser and have given it a couple of doses of Seasol.

I have kept the water up to it because it's still reasonably new and in a pot.

What am I doing wrong?

I remember watching Peter once, he had a similar problem, well at least that what the person thought. Have you tried self fertilizing, otherwise perhaps be very skeptical.

Here we go again BÂyou cannot continue to push your views of self feltization on others. It is clearly not the way to go. As we have discussed many times in the past years this is simply a horrible practice. I understand you believe it works well but you and Peter are on your own with these views. With our without water restrictions!

Hmmmm... just an offhand guess, but I would say some sort of disease. I do not believe it is a watering or nutrient problem because there is no clear pattern to the dying leaves and I do not believe it's an insect problem for the same reason. I would recommend removing the damaged leaves immediately and leaving the rest of the plant. Much of the time diseased plants do just fine if the disease pressure is controlled (removing affected leaves). Perhaps someone else has seen the same thing and knows what the affliction is, but if it were me I would start off by getting the affected leaves away from the plant.

Hi Tam, I agree with Chris- from your description it sounds like you surely have thrips. I pulled all of my bell peppers last month even as they started to reflower b/c they started to show signs of thrip damage- new tender leaves (i.e. most yummy ones LOL) show deformity and curling and sometimes slight discoloring/darkening. Some species of thrips like the chili/chilean are extremely small and light colored, making them very difficult to see. Look closely and I bet you find your culprit. HTH Naomi

That is not a very good picture. Maybe take it outside in the sun to photo next time. But, no, it doesn't appear to be nute burn. nute burn typically looks like the edge of the leafy is drying up. turns dark brown and gets crumbly.

Don't know how, or where, you're watering, but the tree isn't getting enough of it. Need to get water into the original rootzone. To do so, you can build a 2-inch tall dike at the edge of the rootball, then fill the basin once or twice every day. Hope you also pre-soaked the planting hole before setting th tree in place. And I hope you also made certain the rootball was completely moist at planting time. If not, keep that in mind for the next tree you put in.

It sounds like salt damage to me. Back off on fertilizers and watering. Only water when the top 2-3 cm is dry (test with fingers) and when you water make sure the water flows from the drainage holes to flush the salts from the potting mix. If the water flows instantly from the drainage holes suspect that the mix has become non wetting and use a soil wetting product to make sure that your watering is effective.
