Identity of water vine

A friend who grew up in the Killarney area in SE Qld told me about a native vine which produces water. She said that "the ones with grey blotches were poisonous, but the ones with white blotches could be tapped with a knife, and clear water would come out, just like drinking water." We've established that it's not cissus hypoglauca. Does anyone know what this vine might be?

Hi SueBrad, there are a couple of vines that could be. These are also called water vines.. Tetrastigma nitens and The Cayratia Genus. Not sure which ones are good for drinking? You would be cutting years of growth to get a little water tho.

I remembered your post from a while back and while browsing for something else came across this link - a quite different Cissus - C antarctica, which does mention the water use

Good questions! As long as you keep some vines alive and healthy until spring, you can use the rooted tips as slips. The challenge is avoiding indoor pests like spider mites and whiteflies. For this reason I would limit how much vegetation you have growing, keeping in mind that whatever roots are present now will be in very bad shape by planting time in late spring. I suggest propagating your stock now, by rooting a fresh crop of stem tips in water, and then potting up some of those plants in late winter. They will grow into lush little plants that can be sunk into a bucket of sand when the weather warms in late spring, forming the foundation stock for your sweet potato slip nursery. Hope this helps.

I don't get it, why don't you want to water near the main stem? For sure though, squashes put down aventicious roots at each leaf joint that touches the ground. And you want those roots to draw moisture and nutrients. If you grow vining squash in a well-prepared and moist spot, and let the vines travel over barren, dry, hard soil... those plants will wilt on warm/dry days. If instead the vines are able to draw moisture all along their lengths, they draw plenty of water to prevent wilting. Some people say the wilting is natural and that's true. It's a natural reaction to water depravation. Having said all that, in the typical back yard it's impractical to cultivate such large areas that vining squashes will cover. I try to give each vine at least 3 or 4 feet in every direction of soil that is fertile and watered. After that, they're on their own, and some wilting will occur.
