Specifically, the Purple Passion flower vines sold in HD and Lowes where I used to live were the wild native "Maypop" variety. The Flower is beautiful and smells just like Purple sweet tarts. They are extremely hardy... Grow like mad. None of the ones I have bought out of HD and Lowes have ever fruited -- even though I even tried hand pollinating them... and I have owned a bunch of them. I talked to some fellows at local Nurseries that sold cultivated fruiting varieties of passion fruit vines -- they said there were Male and Female plants... and the showy HD Plants were Males (No wonder I couldn't get fruit...) Female fruiting plants are considerably more expensive and available only in Nurseries... I have tried eating the wild "Maypops" out of ditches on the side of the road... Unimpressed... Nothing special to say about them... They have none of the wonderful taste of a Cultivated Passion Fruit... To sum up my personal experience: "Homestore" passion vines are great if you want hardy vines that produce lots of Flowers and no Fruit. If you want Fruit, get cultivated Fruiting varieties out of proper Nurseries... YMMV. John

I assume that zone 9 is in the southeast. If so, you need to understand that we have more than one season for vegetable gardening here. When I lived in the Midwest, we planted summer vegetables in mid May and hoped to harvest it all by late September or early October before killing frosts arrived. The Southeast is very different. We can literally grow some kind of vegetables nearly every month of the year. I planted this year's summer crops in March. THEN, I pulled them all out and replanted more summer crops in mid to late July. They will have time to make before my first frost arrives in early to mid November (you'll have even more time). I pulled out the first crops because: a.)they have produced most/all of what they will produce and what little is left is prostrated or heat checked by the high heat of mid summer, b.)the older these annual plants are the more likely they are to fall prey to insect and disease problems and c.)it's easier to plant fresh crops than it is to try to baby along first crop plants that are pooped out. Come mid October, I will plant cool weather crops, none of which will grow at all in our summers: cabbage, lettuce, broccoli, onions, greens of all kinds, carrots, parsley, cilantro, garlic, and more. THEN in February, I will plant the early spring garden: fresh crops of the above, plus English peas, which are iffy even then. See? gardening in the south is different and, once you get used to the climate, better, I think. You need to do some internet research on your area to learn your first and last frost dates and planting schedules for your area. Your state agricultural university will be one of your very best sources for info.

Pirate and dellis~~ Great Plants! so huge! I think my cat would think he was a jungle cat with all that! lol So, what I can do if I wanted to, is to "anchor" them in something, then put them in another source of water and let it sit. So simple. Thanks :) I seen something on Facebook the other day, they had an aquarium, they put a sheet of Styrofoam on top of the water, cut holes in it and put the plants in the holes. That way the roots were in the water and the plant itself would stay above. I thought that was a great idea, when we have room. Well I got frustrated this afternoon, IDK, all of a sudden I had no idea of what I was doing. I have been having an ongoing issue with keeping the leaves OUT of the water, I think the little fish bowl was too big (for now) to do that with. So, I trimmed a few leaves off, got some new starts, and made up 3 new jars for it, Now the leaves are above water and the roots are in water. (My DH seems to think I just killed them all, This is one time I do hope he is NOT right! /sigh) I am hoping that they all will get big enough to put all in the little fish bowl soon enough.(and be able to keep the leaves out of the water) The ones I have with the Swedish Ivy are doing real nice, think I will keep those together. But I am going to leave them alone for a while now, let them get settled down some. And cross my fingers, eyes and toes and pray for the best.. ha-ha. Nckvilledudes, As I said I order 2 of the SAC's and after looking and reading up on them I think one will be more then enough!! So that leaves me with a extra one and I've been wandering around thinking about where I could plant it and I was wondering if I could plant it with my Wisteria? They both are crazy growers so do you think one would choke out the other? It would be a nice combo because my Wistera don't flower lol or I shall say it hasn't yet (3 years) But I chopped it back and moved it and I'm hoping that I shocked it into flowering for me next year and don't end up killing it ;) Plus it would fill in all that green in the fall when the SAC flowers.
