Question about watering vining crops

catherinet

I have often wondered this.......When I am watering vining crops, such as winter squash, cucs, etc., do I just need to water where the original seeds were planted? Do they take up water anywhere else along the vines, once they are established? Do they take any water through their leaves?

I have a large area of butternut squash, but if I only need to water where they originally were planted, I won't waste so much water.

Thanks.
