Hello to everyone on the forum. Thought it was time to show the tomato patch. I know I am about 3-4 weeks behind the news so please take this as a first gesture towards getting back on board again.
The pictures were taken today.

Love it. Nice and sundrenched. Walkways between rows closing in. Looking forward to following this thread in coming weeks.

Hey EG, how are you doing? What specific moisture meter are you using in getting a reading of 3-4? Regarding just using Miracle-Gro potting mix alone, I have found it is too "good" in wicking, and that is why I am running about 30 different combinations of potting mix, Turface, Cactus Mix, Bark Fines, Redwood Compost, and Perlite. To date, the 3:2:1 ratio of potting mix, bark fines, Perlite seems to be doing the best in the EarthTainers. I'll have to validate this with several 'Tainer grows of this ratio in the Spring planting - - but I will NEVER use plain potting mix in the 'Tainers again. Raybo

We just moved to Arizona from Washington. I would never have tried to grow tomatoes out doors prior to moving here. I have two Early Girls with flowers and green tomatoes in the ground now, and have been covering them to protect them from the rain. Do I need to be doing this? Also.....same with zuchini. Do I need to continue covering these guys as well? I only cover when it gets below 35 degrees. I have never had a problem with the rain and do not cover them. The humidity in the air keeps the temperature up enough below freezing during this rain right now. So I do not cover my plants. i don't think that it will hurt them if you keep them covered though.

Thanks everyone.My mother and i have been gardening as a team all my life.I am 6'2 230 and she is 4'11 110 LOL-I think that shows the labor breakdown.Everything we grow is started from seed in my growroom-allows us to find varities that hold up to all the extremes. All the tomatoes were Burpee this year.I know no heirlooms, but work took me out of country and mom went with what is reliable... 30 little mama canning tomato- massive production last 4 years 15 Big mama-mom likes size.Less productive and have genetic leaf curl(ugly)but mom loves- grown10 years 10 big boy-gotta keep the BLT folks happy Tangerine mama-tasty,pretty Golden mama-Pictured earlier- tasty Sweet baby girl- big and juicy cherry Black pearl cherry- Mom my veto these next year I would like to grow some yellow cherries next year. Will keep pics updated now that i figured it out.

Oh no rush at all. :) I truly appreciate your kindness. 11.1 eh? Man I am still in the dark ages with 5.1 and a hodge-podge mix of speakers from different manufacturers. I do have two 5.1 systems sharing a single Media Center PC (recently upgraded to Windows 7) between two rooms, each with it's own HDTV set. The Sony rear projection gets the DVI from one output on the video card while the Westinghouse LCD gets the SVGA from the other. It's just a matter of telling the graphics driver which TV display to output the video signal to (since there's not enough horsepower in the hardware for the system to clone the display.. the resolutions would be impossible to share for the highest definition on each set anyhow). I'd like to find a way to quick key the display and use the remote software I purchased to make display switching seamless (instead of remoting into the PC from a laptop to make the switch depending on which room I want the PC to send video and sound to). Also to split optical audio I've been unable to, even with an optical booster and optical 'Y'. One TV is 50' away from the PC while the other is about 8'. I suspect the distance causes the light to dim enough so either receiver doesn't have enough signal to decode. The optical audio amp is about useless (made by Radio Shack, got off eBay with a clearance sticker on the box for a much less expensive price than I paid). :/ So in switching the display I also have to manually swap optical audio cables. Got it all down to a science. :) Anyhow I can imagine you are very entangled in the setup you are doing. I bet it will sound great when done! Have you thought of experimenting with audio on your tomato plants like the Mythbusters trialed once on peas? The heavy metal music was the most effective in spurring the most growth from that. :)

Sorry it has taken me so long to reply. Ray, I am slowly chopping back the lawn. The tomato patch has doubled in three years! I reckon there is room for at least another 2 rows!? A consuming passion this tomato growing. Thanks Grub. Yes as the season progresses the rows get narrower. I have to get down the rows and spray with a 20kg backpack sprayer (16 litres spray). Just as well I am 55kg wringing wet with my overcoat on! Thanks Patrina. I like your growbag method. It looks very effective and the white colour would help to reflect heat away from the roots in hot weather. Can't wait until Marysville. Should have a great selection to bring this year. The season is really going well. Harvested Burnley Surecrop three days before Christmas. Burnley Metro has a very similar growth habit to Burnley Surecrop (semi determinate) and yields look also similar; but the fomer is later by at least a week. Red Brandywine (Landis strain) is ripening, White Potato leaf also, Black Russian and Earl's Faux. Sungold, Black Cherry and Snow White Cherry also being harvested. Isis Candy is a difficult one, had few tomatoes on it and none ripe so far. Cheers Craig

im having a problem where im getting heaps of flowers, but none of them are setting - just about all are dropping off and I dont know why. It hasn't been cold, watering has been consistent and each plant along with the planting hole received a good sprinkle of sulfate of potash when they went in

Lots of mine are dropping flowers at present too. I think it's the heat.

Put some shade cloth over them if you can. This will help

I've had the same problem with both Kelloggs Breakfast and Brandywine Suddeth... no fruit yet, just lots of brown flowers dropping off :-(

We had a lot o hot days in a row, (12>. and it made most of the top flowers fall off. My sister said it's been filthy in Melbourne, and she's in Ringwood!!
Ours seem to be recovering now though.
