It's been pea-ing it down in Tassie - 2 inches ( I'm medium to rare old so excuse my Imperialism)- just in time to turn the commercial growers' tasteless. I love to work in the rain - must be my Yorkshire blood! I've just got saturated to the skin, but I reckon harvesting your own veggies in a downpour is fantastic reminds me of the tropics. Got 30 kg off this lot before podding - should yield about 8 kg podded. Enough to freeze with some spearmint for us and the kids. The earlier crop got us 9 kg podded. So for a small space about 2.5m x 2.5m we yielded 17 kg. Now for the broad beans before they riot; then I can plant those currant tomatoes - all 36.

I would be hanging out for the broad beans I just love them.
I used to plant them every Autumn when I lived in Melbourne.
Mind you not a lot got to the plate they are so sweet when very young.
I did try them up here not a very good success rate, good to hear yours is better.

Go Linda, Go. Amazing yield. Our BB's were put in too late, and we just got a little taste of them this year. The taste is a little strong for me, but lovely in a pasta with a few tommies and some garlic and smoked Trout, sprinkled lightly with a good strong Romano or somesuch.
I can't get enough peas, I absulutely love them. But as with others, very few get to the table. I graze "on the hoof".

I've found out now as I have both growing. The pods on sweet peas are covered in downy hair and if you touch them and lock your fingers there is a bitter taste. Edible pea pods have a smooth skin and there is a flower but it's not the main event.

In recent years, I have been pursuing & trialing the "afila" (semi-leafless) varieties, such as "Novella" & "Mesa". They are short, self-supporting if planted closely (well adapted to wide rows), and tend to ripen uniformly... but so far, the yield has been disappointing, and the harvest window short. "Mesa" demonstrates considerable instability, and I am hoping to improve it. There is even an afila snap pea, "Sugar Lace". The pods are quite large for a sugar snap, and borne on short 12" vines. The original had very poor germination for me, even after multiple attempts; "Sugar Lace II" (which is still a PVP variety) has fared much better. But my all-time favorite green pea is "Green Arrow", for its large pods, compact vines, and high yield.

I am glad you brought this up at this very moment, Keen. The entire 2011 harvest of Green Arrow was completed in a matter of minutes and I enjoyed some of them with new potatoes, last night! What a difference a year makes! I don't know what the problem was this spring. Or, I don't know what the critter was this spring! Something feasted on the first 2 beds of peas I put in! The seedlings had barely emerged when they began to show damage - like grasshoppers make. But, I hadn't seen 1 grasshopper. The only bugs in the garden I had seen in any number were flea beetles and yet, I don't think I ever saw any on the peas. What I am wondering is if the beetle larvae were in the soil in that part of the garden and chewing up the seedlings as they emerged. I don't know but it was terrible. I sprayed with rotenone/pyrethrin without apparent effect. Only a few plants at the end of one bed survived well enuf to flower and produce pods. They were so few and stunted that I didn't build any trellis for them. Elsewhere, the peas were replaced with cucumber transplants and more tomatoes! This is the 1st time I can remember when I've had so much trouble with peas. And the spring weather in 2010 & 2011, was remarkably similar. Good Luck with your peas in 2012! I wish you the best of luck. It's possible that those seeds may not grow, it just depends on how they were treated when they were processed. If they don't you could always try a local farmers co-op or other place that sells bulk seeds for gardeners. Just dont' get treated seeds. I don't know what you are using for instructions but here is a link to a trusted source for growing pea shoots. You can buy them from these guys too, though they are more than the IGA ones. I get my other sprouting seeds from them and have never had back luck with their seed. They started out here in Wisconsin too so another plus for why I buy from them. Sprout People

Hi Linda, glad you a such a great return for your labour. The dreaded snail got into part of my peas, but we still got a couple of kilo podded. I have a row of snow peas about fifteen cms. high and hope that i planted them just in time to get a return.I have about twenty tommie plants in and some have nice green fruit on them.
You were lucky getting two inches the other night as we only had an inch at Beauty Point

I spent a long time podding peas today! Fortunately the grandies came around do I set them to work. They had a little friend with them who thought peas only came in frozen packets! I think it was luck not management.I've never had such a yield! I planted them really thickly it rows only about 2 inches apart, shoved a load of short canes in for them to climb up and the weather did the rest - the right conditions when they flowered and the right amount of rain to make them fat. We had broadbeans tonight with some sprouting broccolli, some of last year's carrots out of the freezer and a nice pork fillet rolled in fennel seeds and baked in the oven. Life's good! I've got a pic of the peas taken while they were fattening about two weeks ago - sorry it's on my astro-blog page, not my usual picture page.
