Hi folks,

I have not previously grown paw paw. This morning I was given 7 paw paw seedlings by a kind soul. I entered paw paw in a search on this forum and it came up zip. So here is my question: What do I need to know about planting and growing paw paw in south west suburbs of Brisbane? Thanks in anticipation, Daniel

g'day dan,

they're fairly easy to grow they don't like frost especially if they are under around 2.5 mters in height the seedling should grow fast if in nutrient rich well watered, well drained soil. not sure of the origin of the seedling eg.,. the paw paw they came out of but if they are the yellow ones then you may not have any female trees.

i found i had to plant hundreds of seeds over the past 4 years to end up with a good stand of female trees, you only need about 1 male tree to 8 female trees, males can prodcue good fruit but not as prolific as the females.

the taste of a home grown paw paw will leave those shop ones for dead, i am not a huge paw paw fruit lover but i'll eat my own real easy. ours grow on natural rainfall and my usual heavy mulching.

if you want to be sure of getting female tree buy the red paw paw seedling or get seed from the fruit of those trees.

@jianhuayegreentree, I have uploaded a picture. Two cicles are the areas of two branches i grafted early spring but they did not survive finally. They are the only branches at that time. All other branches are the new growrh this year. I will try to graft again next year. preferably, i would like not to cut the main trunk but any other branches will be fine. i can choose the topmost two branches (two red lines) other than the main trunk to graft. do you think what the probability for them to survive? i am thinking it may be easier for scion to survive when tree become bigger because the growth vogor will reduce so the competition between scion and other growth may not be that strong. how big is your tree that you had grafted successfully? A picture of the tree and the growth condition of the survived brach would be very helpful. Thanks for the comments. @jianhuayegreentree.

I've bought pecan trees that came from Forrest Keeling. Their RPM method seems to produce a nice dense root ball and all five trees have done well. I got four of them through a commercial pecan plantation because FK doesn't normally sell to the public anywhere but at their nursery. However, I also got one tree at the University of Missouri chestnut festival. FK had a booth there and were selling various nut trees. It might be worth contacting them to see if perhaps they would be setting up a booth at any functions you could attend, if their location is too distant to consider the trip. I've been happy enough with their products that I would consider the two hour drive if there was a particular plant I wanted. I think their RPM method has been copied by a number of other nurseries....or maybe they copied it...when you read the description is seems pretty logical. For instance, some English walnuts I bought from Stark were in the same kind of pots FK describes. Don't know if Stark buys from them (they are neighbors) or just uses the same pots. As to pawpaws, some FK pawpaws are listed as Petersons, and if I wanted to try that fruit I'd probably buy from them. Chuck

Hi Jesse, per a visitor to my place this week, the Thompson Park trees don't appear to have any fruit remaining. There are 3 public groves you might try instead: 1) in Cranbury, NJ near 13-1 Maplewood Ave. (grove on way into park to east); 2) Rte. 130/Horizon Center Blvd. Hamilton Twp., off the jughandle at approx. 40.198481, -74.641449 ; and 3) Allentown, Heritage Park on Indian Run off Robbinsville Allentown Rd. at approx. 40.180782, -74.591362 . Or visit me in Hamilton, NJ; call for directions and schedule a visit 609.731.3882. There are other groves and trees here and there; groves require light and genetic diversity to enable fruit set.

Sandy - Though I now live in NC, I am originally from OK (central) so I know your region well. There are most likely wild pawpaws in your area. They range in damp woodlands all the way to Canada so there is no reason you wouldn't have them. My garden is also large and I went crazy planting and propagating more pawpaws and there is a downside to having a large collection of pawpaw trees - all the fruit is ripe at the same time. You will struggle to eat, freeze, or give away multiple wheelbarrow loads of fruit each day for weeks in late August. I have found that if you have one non relative planted in the same row or very close to a row or cluster of named varieties you will get good pollination. My favorite is 'Sunflower' so I now have a row of them with one no-name seedling as a pollinator. My trees bloom most often in mid February when we have a spell of warm weather. I dump garden debris and leaves at the base of the trees and there are always small flies buzzing around mid winter when it is above freezing. Those flies do the pollinating for me.

You might be lucky enough to get a few hermaphrodites. They pop up occasionally. Strange plant. Good luck with them. I love fresh pawpaw with lime juice.

Thanks folks. I was given 7 seedlings. I have read the dpi site info and so I will prepare the soil next week (I commence holidays this Thursday night...yay!) and plant them out in February. The person who gave me the seedlings said they are "the good type". I am grateful and will give them a go.

good site carol,

pity they don't say how to determine male and female seeds from the yellow paw paws that would make life that bit easier.

interesting about the nitrogen aspect on the page maybe why mine taste so sweet compared to those commercial ones grown on nutrient deprived rocky slopes, i mulch my trees with green pasture mulch, the trees always look healthy and for a not paw paw eating fan the fruit has converted me.
