davidrt28, the key words there are 'in central London'. I mentioned large conurbations as a warmer climate where Abutilons might grow outside. They also survived where I grew up on the South Coast about 1/2 mile from the sea. But they will only thrive in favoured micro climates, not as a general rule. The other thing to remember is that if you went to London in the Summer you might well have seen Summer bedding i.e. plants put out only for the Summer and replaced by other material for winter. Cannas, for example , are frequently used in summer bedding schemes to get a tropicalesque feel. Canary Island Date Palms are being increasingly seen as the climate warms up but still only in warmer micro climate areas. Elsewhere they are temporary inhabitants of our flower beds. Kenwood is in London so Kentish Bell might possibly be growing there. There is a Poncirus trifoliata round the back of St Pauls (Paternoster Square) which shows how mild it is. Frost is rare in Central London. I had a look at the 'barren' bed and it looks to me as if it is awaiting planting of the Summer bedding. Kenwood House is not situated on public roads so I can't use street view on it. Anyway our OP seems to have disappeared so, yet gain, we are to talking to ourselves.

Barb, I just went out & checked - unfortunately I seem to have either planted or given away all my Aesculus parviflora ... They were grown from the seed of my original bush & from seed collected from UWO's bushes :o) I purchased my first plant years ago at a nursery in Delhi - I have looked in the phone book & they don't seem to be in business anymore. You might try giving 'Garden of Eden Tree Farm' a call 519 866-5269 They are just south of Hwy 3 between Aylmer & Tillsonburg and they grow an interesting selection of trees & shrubs. Hey Sara, thanks! I actually went to pond and garden in your neck of the woods last year due to your recommendation. I picked up several really cool things there too. Really great nursery. I like to stop by a good nursery at the different places i travel to as they are all so different and unique. ken, just travel in the US, so no customs. I did get them thru security just fine if that is what you were asking. I do sometimes get some strange looks going thru security though...they usually do a double take as they see that the bag is full of trees! Haha! David, no offense taken. There certainly were some plants on the high side. However, there were some rare things listed well below online prices too. So, depending on what you were looking for, you could overpay. A couple of the plants I picked up were probably a little on the expensive side, but some were less...and I didn’t have to pay any shipping and got to choose them myself. The other part of the nursery that I really liked was the garden setting...very beautiful. I loved the monumentale sugar maples, mature skylands, metasequoia, etc. just a really neat experience. Overall, I would say it was a great nursery for conifers, maples, ginkgos, etc. In this day when it seems like the only nurseries you can get rare stuff from are online, I like to support local nurseries...otherwise, pretty soon the only place to get this kind of tree from will be online. Again, not disagreeing with you or saying you are wrong at all, just clarifying my opinion. I would be interesting in checking out other nurseries too next time I am out there. Oh, and forgot to mention 1 other tree I got there...Pinus densiflora ‘Edsal Wood’.
