Collecting seeds from natives

During the short amount of time I have been researching rare and endangered species it was suggested to me that I could apply for a permit to collect my own seeds from native plants. Does anyone know who or where I can find out more about this type of permit?

Whilst on that subject I have another question, I collected the seed pods from 3 "guichenotia macrantha", now what. Any tips on the best way to turn these seeds into beautiful shrubs?

Alicia, around here you can buy bags of long fiber dried sphagnum moss at garden centers -- I've even seen it at Lowe's, too. That's what I use. I just rub it through a strainer, the ordinary kind with a handle you can buy in the kitchen tools section of a grocery store. It's the same moss as florists use, just dried. If the potting mix stays too moist or drainage isn't sufficient, add perlite. Don't worry about the seemingly big size of the perlite relative to the tiny seed. The sphagnum moss (or live moss, like Mainegrower uses) gets the seed going and then it roots down easily into the medium below. It seems to me azalea seedlings likes a lot of oxygen in the soil and not too much wet. Once they get beyond a certain size it becomes less critical. The other thing to do is make sure your containers have as many drain holes as you can reasonably punch in the bottom. I use an ice pick and put maybe 20 sizable holes in the bottom of a 3" x 5" container. You want the water to flow freely out of the bottom. Soeur

Randy, I'd love to have some, too. I have several species I've planted, so can send you some seeds in fall. I know for sure that my A. asperula is up (2 plants). This is also commonly called Antelope Horns. It is native to Oklahoma, as are the other species I'm growing. You'd probably have about as good a luck just tossing them out in the field. The seeds I grew didn't seem to like the potting soil very well. Once I got them in the ground, they took off like a house afire. I will have A. syriaca (common), A. viridiflora (green milkweed), A. incarnata (Swamp--heehee, we can really use that now!); A. verticillata (whorled milkweed), and A. purpurescens (purple milkweed). You're too kind! I hope we have increased the desire in other Oklahomans to grow milkweed and enjoy these beautiful butterflies. Seen anymore moths, lately? Are you raising the Walnut Sphinx? I keep checking my saplings (some are about 5' tall) in hopes of finding one. I also check the Elderberry to see if I ever get a Cecropia. Susan

What you need is someone who understands this much better than I do, but I figured I should post the links to help you or the expert who might happen along. Best of luck! But in any case, if it's really PVP, then the variety must be open-pollinated rather than hybrid. Thanks for the suggestions, I will be looking into in.

A Mandurah Wildflower Group, now that could be interesting since I just had 12 of the beautiful prostanthera magnifica shrubs sent to me by mail from "Mukinbuddin". That was an interesting way to order plants, cheaper than any of the local nurseries and the plants travelled really well. Can't wait to get them in the ground.

Thanks again for the hints and tips I appreciate all the help I can get.

Each state of Australia has its own government department responsible for research permits. In my state (SA) I had to submit a lengthy application stating reasons and nature of my research including collecting voucher specimens for the state herbarium, especially those plants I collected seed from. WA has a herbarium and a website at http://science.calm.wa.gov.au/herbarium/
- perhaps you could try there first.

What annoys me is that when I've gone out collecting seed, with all the permits and ethical collection rules drilled in; I get to the target site and some git in a 4x4 has driven over the plants and destroyed most of the seed.

The last time I went seed collecting with landcare the last patch of a rare species had been burnt out and 'weed' (marajuana) planted everywhere.

The reality is that the laws only stop those who are trying to do the right thing - people I know in high places in various herbariums and national parks have told me off the record that the laws are futile and should be changed.

I collect native seed all the time. I dont have permit. I collect on my land, and on the council strip along the roads.

I am not allowed to collect in National Parks, so I dont collect there.
