Must see gardens in East Anglia?

My husband and I will travel around East Anglia for five days in late April and early May. We'll be based in either Thetford or Norwich. We shall visit the Beth Chatto garden, East Ruston Old Vicarage and Bressingham. I've chosen them because I have thought they will be worth seeing even though not much may be in bloom this early.

Are there any other must see gardens? Famous spring gardens? Is Peckover House worth a visit? I'd rather see smaller gardens than grand landscape gardens.

Anglesey Abbey - don't be put off by the name - it's nowhere near Wales.
Also, if you visit Cambridge, the University Botanic Gardens is quite nice. They have a wonderful Jade Vine in the glass house. And the tea gardens at Grantchester are scruffy but atmospheric.

I would recommend you get hold of the 'Yellow Book' for Norfolk. This tells you gardens which are open for charity under the National Gardens Scheme. Many only open a few days a year.

There will be loads to see in April/May. We're a bit milder than Sweden! May is probably the prettiest time of the year in my garden.

Thanks bboy! :-) I too am leaning toward New England, especially since this stuff is growing more than three feet high. Supposedly the Sky Blue Aster only grows between two and three feet, New England Aster between three and six feet. On the other hand, it's growing in partial shade, and it's still a few weeks before the first frost, when I thought the New England Asters were supposed to bloom. You can see the source of my confusion.

Hi Daun, It will be beautiful in August! Montecito is a charming area of Santa Barbara. If you have time, have lunch there and look in the shops. Via Vai is a relaxed Italian restaurant that has an outdoor terrace. It is relatively inexpensive. If you want upscale the Four Seasons Biltmore in Montecito has an ocean view terrace where you can have lunch or dinner. The Bacara Resort is at the opposite end of town (in Goleta) They have an outdoor restaurant that overlooks the ocean. It is expensive like the Biltmore, but the views are worth the prices. If you want to sit on the beach and have lunch or dinner the Shoreline Cafe has tables in the sand. OK food, not fancy, but if you want to be on the beach it is fun. Those are just a few that I think would be nice in the August heat. There are so many great places. If you have a specific type of food in mind or location just let me know. Have a wonderful trip! you must take a walk through Old Northeast neighborhood.It's right behind Sunken Gardens,pretty much. It's just east of 4th streetnorth down by 22n Ave north. If you go a little further east(a few blocks) you will hit the water and there's a nice walkway there. You can park anywhere in the neighborhood but you can also park right by the water (North Shore pool is my favorite spot to park) It's a beautiful shady walk, you can walk for 30 minutes or hours,take comfy shoes and you'll love the feel of the place and it costs NOTHING!! teeka
