New beds & planter bags planted

My son recently visited from interstate and built me some new beds in the front yard using rocks that were lying around the "garden" (it could hardly be called a garden actually, just a tree with overgrown shrubs). Anyhow, I finally have an area that will get more than 5 hours of sun per day!

This is my first ever flower garden out of smaller leftover rocks, new garden beds in the background.

In my old shady garden bed I put a few tomato F2 plants from which I just want to see a few fruits. I need to check for fruit colour and type and decide if there's anything worth growing on. There's a few young lettuce plants and some herbs in front of them.

Here's part of my back yard with planter bags placed to get a few hours of morning sun. You can see how close the forest of pine trees is at the fence line! The closer ones to the fence will be shaded by noon, and the ones at the front of the pic will be shaded by 2.30pm.

Now it's time to watch everything grow and catch up with all the things I've neglected. Still need to plant out the peppers in the front garden bed nearer the house. I'm waiting for my chilli seedlings to grow - they are painfully slow and late!

He did a good job, should look really good when grown.

You've got a lot of work with those bags. Do you trouble with them falling over or collapsing? I used them for a while and had trouble with them leaning.

Would using black bags be too hot for the roots? I thought it might have helped give them a boost until the weather warms up for you, then you could shade the bags if it got too hot for them?

Suebot - You will definitely have to amend that soil. Japanese Maples demand excellent drainage and acid soil. As a first step, I would suggest removing the soil to a wheelbarrow or something and lining the bottom with a layer of gravel to help improve the drainage. Then, to the soil I would go ahead and add the peat moss (helps w/acidity) as well as a lot of coarse sand and maybe some organic compost or composted manure. As for how much of what to put in, you may have to experiment (or ask your local nursery) to get the drainage you need. I've included a link to an article that tells you how to test the drainage of a small amount of the mixture (as well as a good fertilizer regimen). I would start out with a mixture of half soil/half sand with some peat moss and compost thrown in and go from there. I hope all that trouble doesn't discourage you from planting a Japanese Maple! That article you posted mentioned some good cultivars, but my favorites have to include 'Dissectum' and 'Waterfall.' Just remember that cultivars with perennially purple leaves need more sun than I think you can offer, but green cultivars will make up for it by putting on a breathtaking Autumn display! I think your container would overwinter well outdoors. With the right soil mixture, I think it will reward you for many years to come. Oh, and no matter what you ultimately decide to plant in it, can you post a picture of it when it's done? You've piqued my interest and I would like to know how it turns out for you. For the record, I've successfully grown various plants in hard unamended clay as long as I watered properly (drip irrigation is good for letting water slowly percolate deeply into clay soil). You really want clay-tolerant plants if you want to see your planting bed thrive right away, but if you're patient, you can wait a season or two to build up your soil with lots of OM like compost and fast decaying wood chips. Plants I've successfully grown in plain clay dirt with no top soil are brugmansia (Angel Trumpet) and other plants that thrive in clay such as canna lilies, hibiscus, aster, Russian sage, wild bee balm, yarrow, geranium, roses, lots and lots of roses, etc. Rugged natives and tap rooted clay-tolerant plants can get deep enough to break down the texture of clay. There are many to choose from. Our clay soils are pretty mineral rich, just remember to a little nitrogen fertilizer. You can accomplish that through plain old shredded leaves from your yard and fast decomposing wood chips (they'll temporarily tie up the N but release it back later).

Peat or coir (coconut fiber) is the primary ingredient in virtually all commercial potting or container mixes. So chances are excellent you will be using one or the other :-) I find most YouTube videos to be incredibly unreliable when it comes to any sort of gardening issue. The vast majority are produced by amateur gardeners with minimal skills and typically inaccurate advice. If you have questions, come here to GardenWeb :-)

Before getting your heart set on boxwood, check with your county extension agent on the prevalence of boxwood blight in your area. Have you previously grown barberry? It's both wicked thorny and invasive so that choice is also questionable. A photo would be helpful but from your description it sounds like low maintenance evergreens would be a good choice with a few annuals tucked in for color each year.

Except for Moldovan Green I was trying to put just one of the varieties out front to compare with the same varieties in bags out back in the shady areas, but I accidently potted both Ester Hess Yellow Cherries in the same bed, opposite ends :P I deliberately put both Moldovan Greens, a black, purple, yellow and orange one in the first row by the street in the hope that people walking by wouldn't be as tempted to steal them.... most people around here still think tomatoes should be red!

Chillies - dunno as yet - some look sick and may not get planted. Looks like I'm not having a good chilli year this year.

Goldhills, I didn't have any problems last year with the bags falling over or collapsing. I'm using a different potting mix this year, so I'll see how it goes.

I definitely prefer the white bags to black pots. I found that black pots get very hot and need to be watered more frequently. But I don't start planting out as early as I used to, and so the warmth of the soil is less of an issue. I'm pretty happy with the bags so far - I'm using about 150 this season.
