pruning acacia cognata

I've had a wonderful a.cognata that I decided was getting too woody underneath and if it grew any taller wouldn't look good, so I pruned it, taking off the top layers and thereby exposing the woody stems. It doesn't look great any more. Have I wrecked it? Do you think it will regrow underneath? the top of the plant looks fine but there doesn't seem to be any regrowth along the bare stems. Methinks I should have left it alone .
