Diseased frogs?

Hi,

I have some very perculiar looking frogs in my pond and I really don't know what it is, despite searching on the web.

They have what looks like big pale-blue-grey bumps on them, some very big, but no redness or bleeding or peeling skin. There's one which looks like he is covered in mutant pale-blue-grey barnacles, but he is just as frisky as the others! Not all of them have it, but with the spawning session going on in the pond with such enthusiasm I can see it will be spread across a much wider group. :(

I'll try to get a picture posted soon.

Any advice would be very helpful as no other disease I can find describes the symptoms the frogs are showing.... thanks.

Hi,

Maybe the photo will help - probably my description sounds a bit strange..... any ideas anyone? I'm obviously very worried about it.

I've noticed the same 'growths' on some of our frogs, but not as extensive as in your picture but as you say, they are just as active as the others. I have noticed it for about 3 years now, but have not seen any problems with dead or poorly frogs.

I assume it is some kind of fungal growth?

"Could the frog be eating your fish?" Absolutely (tho' I agree with the others that there may be other reasons.) I had a huge frog last year who repeatedly ate some of my goldies (big ones too!) I first noticed a good sized goldie laying beside the pond. Was still alive so I returned it to the pond and said, "hmmmm." Next day, saw a flash of gold out of the pond. When I rounded the pond, I saw him, Mr. Frog with a goldie tail hanging out of his mouth! I chased him, but he jumped into the pond and submerged. A little later he was sitting on the edge of the pond with the goldie. Surprised me, but did keep the fish load in check!

I think you should rethink this issue. If there are any native frogs or toads in your area they will find your pond. Just be sure to understand that what these little critters need is not only a pool for breeding purposes but an adequate food supply and a habitat that will be comparable to the one they were borned into. Another reason for letting the animals find you is that if you want to "take" any amphibian or reptile in the state you will need a permit from the California Department of Fish and Game. Click here to DFG The most important thing I need to stress is the development of suitable habitat that includes your pond for allowing amphibians to exist within. Once this is done and the habitat is supporting an adequate amount of both flying and crawling insects then you may find yourself with other life forms besides frogs. Thanks =) I have no drainage, just a pump behind a false wall on the right side of the tank, it pumps water up through a hose thats also hidden behind the wall, the hose goes about 3/4 of the way up to a piece of cypress driftwood thats imbeded into the rear wall, there it trickles down like a water fall on the driftwood, then it trickles off the driftwood into the bottom of the tank, there it passes through a hidden grate of PVC eggcrate and fiberglass screen and back to the pump, where it all starts all over again, it also has a trickle wall on the left rear of the tank that you can just make out in the pics, thats how the water stays clean, a type of something or other grows on the surface and gobbles up all the liquid waste, in time I noticed that any solid waste is quickly dissolved in the water, so I just do partial water changes from time to time, and your right, no false bottom in this one, Ive got two Green tree frogs a Bird Voiced frog, a Bahama Anole, and three Gambusia fish, all doing great except lately for the anole? Ive had him for about two years now and I noticed that no matter how well he eats and drinks he seems to be getting thinner? I do see him drink (RO water) and he gets gut loaded crickets, earth worms, and meal worms, I also dust the crickets once a week? he moves around and doesnt show any sign of disease? maybe hes just old?? any ways, thanks much for the comments and Im glad you enjoyed the set ups =)

Midwesternerr's advice is right. Another de-chlorinating product is "Ammo-Lock". It also helps remove ammonia from the water (caused by lots of tadpoles pooping). I use a pre-formed stiff pond liner, rather than a flexible one, to stand up to tree roots and punctures better. To avoid trapping little critters in the pond: One can also use water plants and thin, flat rocks for "ramps" to let young emerging frogs/toad and salamanders. I have a potted water willow in my small pond and the roots grow out 8-10" from the edge of the pot. The top of the pot is just above the water level, but little critters can climb out of the water via the floating/partly submerged mat of roots. Then they can walk up and exit on the little ramp I have bridging the willow pot to the pond edge. I have 2 other 'ramps' in other parts of the pond and I try and keep it full. Most emerging frogs and toads can climb the smooth plastic sides without ramps... You can get an inexpensive pump filter for small pond pumps. The one I use is essentially a plastic box around several layers of foam filter. The pump body and water intake goes inside the box, and water passes through 5-6 layers of the foam material before entering the pump. The filters/distance means even tiny critters do not get sucked into the pump. You can remove and clean it easily without disturbing the tadpoles. I recommend letting algae grow on the sides of the pond. Tadpoles eat a lot and they love munching algae. I also bring duckweed to the pond - it helps provide food, oxygen and clean the water (tadpoles poop a lot of nutrients). Besides the water willow, I have Pickerel Weed, and Lizard's tail in pots in the pond. You can supplement your tadpole's pond food with lettuce (they like Red Leaf Lettuce the best, but larger tadpoles can eat Romaine). They also LOVE daylily petals. Every now and then, especially when it's about to rain cats and dogs, I let out a few inches of water from the pond. This gets rid of some of the "old water" in favor of new. Be sure there is some shady, leaf-litter habitat near your pond. Ideally connected to larger expanses of such habitat. If the pond is in a sunny area surrounded by mowed grass, the emerging frogs and toads will have a long "death march" to safety. Finally, even if you do not have frogs/toads in your yard now, you can transplant tadpoles or tiny toads/frogs from elsewhere. But be sure to get them from ephemeral wetlands if you live in suburbia - Bullfrogs, Pig Frogs, Pickerel Frogs, etc. need larger water sources. Or get tiny toads as they emerge from their nurseries elsewhere.

Do you have swan mussels? I know their babies can attach themselves to fish.

Have you picked one up and felt the lumps? are they hard and solid? I know you said they were like barnacles so I guess they are hard. I was just being curious to see if they were as hard as they looked.

Snap!! I was just about to suggest the froglife website too. At least it is not ranavirus or chytridiomycosis, which I understand are the two killers.

It would be interesting to hear what froglife comes up with.

Hi,

I've posted on Alsions website too, but for those of you who haven't seen it, I did contact froglife and they replied to say that they had had a 'flush of emails' about this recently but don't know what it is. They are sending my pictures to the Institute of Zoology to see if they can help work out what it is.....

I have to confess I haven't felt the bumps - I figured the little guy had enough problems without me grabbing him! He's the worst, the rest seem to be less affected or not at all - but as I said before, he seems as happy as Larry, so no obvious ill-effects!

I'll let you know if I hear more......

For those of you who do not visit my forum I will tell you what I have found today. I have found three of my frogs with the same symptoms and managed to have a good look. It is quite strange because on the photo and when the frogs are in the water they look like raised lumps. But when getting him out he was smooth as usual and the lumps don't feel like lumps at all and are under the skin.Not raised at all. How bizarre is that !! Tomorrow I am going to try to get my most affected frog out to have a good look and will post again with the results.
