Starting sweetcorn

I've got some Supersweet sweetcorn seeds and my plot is in Surrey. Is it best to start corn seeds off in a cold frame, or should I just wait to direct seed outside when it warms up?

Thanks everyone.

You would probably get away with direct sowing. I live on the south coast and I always start mine off indoors, in toilet rolls (minus the paper!) This way I can be sure they will be safe from the strong winds we have down here. If you do decide to sow them direct, make sure you give them some protection.

Either way is OK. The seeds should be in soil of a minimum 15ºC (if you have a soil thermometer check it about 9 am each day) in order to germinate and thrive. They CAN be transplanted into cooler soil and still grow, but best if the soil is warm. They tend to be shallow rooted, and with field grown maize (and sweetcorn)I like to sow in the bottom of a furrow and then earth up a few inches once the plants are established. Old McDonald.

ltilton: The clear over black raises soil temperature about 15-20F on sunny days. The highest I've measured in my sweetcorn has been 70-75F so far this spring. On the coldest recent morning with air at 37F the sweetcorn was 48F. So 48/75F bare vs 55/95F covered. This method, during sunny weather, allows emergence as fast or faster in March/April as you would get in July on bare soil. But it's not just emergence that is helped. Warm soil is essential to rapid growth of melons and many other crops. If the soil falls below 60F for several days melons die from damping off. This method works for other crops, especially those needing warm soil or on shallowly planted crops like carrots. The soil stays evenly moist right to the surface. But if you raise the poly off the soil surface, then the soil drys in some areas and condensation from the poly runs to other areas.

Well, I planted a flat and half of early corn in the greenhouse Saturday, and put it on the heat mat. We had 3 inches of snow yesterday, and some sleet and freezing drizzle this morning. Not exactly corn germination weather outside. I tried something called 'Spring Sensation' and then 'Early and Often' from Burpee. Last year, I would actually have had a nice crop of ears from the Early and Often around the 4th of July, except the squirrels stripped it in about 24 hours when it was all but ready to pick.

Well 15 of the last 22 days have been 98 or above with 12 of those days over 100. The "Coolest" it has been is 103 in the last week. I am getting so use to it now, I hardly take breaks anymore. Yes I drink enough water, Yes I work slower, but it was 105 yesterday and I was out planting during half the afternoon and picking tomatoes the other half. It is our county fair week and we have obligation in the mornings and evenings. It is the only time I have to pick, weed and plant. The first week kills you. The second week gets better. The third week you forget about it. We are on the way to 106 today. I have been watering non-stop for the past three weeks it seems. Crops are doing ok. Yields are down. Markets are slower, but prices are high and I am not dropping them anytime soon. No one is complaining about prices. Many people are appreciative of the work we do. Jay

When the silks come out, the tassels should begin producing pollen. Pollen is the very fine dust...not the little flags that fall when you shake the stalks. In your case, you need to shake the stalks to see the dust fly on the silks. Do this for 5 days.

I find starting it indoors gets you off to an earlier start and produces better plants than outdoor sowing, even under jamjars. (I live in the SW)It grows quite fast inside so don't start it too early or you'll be left with plants getting spindly as you wait for warm enough weather to plant out.

I totally envy you --if you can grow corn there in your Garden -- in the the Midwest here --where they grow tons of field corn --we have a hard time growing it in our garden --we did direct sow --in early May [but in zone 5]
By the time the corn got to about 4 foot and the weather was getting hot]the cucumber beetles were on the atack and we ended up just pulling the corn --what a waste of space
I think we have had one good crop out of trying 3 times ..........then with then when it got hummid or rained we got corn smut [galls]
Hope you beter luck than we did
