Help identifying tree

Hi, Looking for help in identifying this tree. It's approximately 10mtrs tall and smooth bark. New leaves open in bowl like clusters. Northern NSW.

Gotta wonder, Ted, how do you do it? I looked at that and thought in some respects it resembled a syzygium! Is errr, 'Harpephyllum caffrum' an Aussie native?

I had a similar question because we have several trees like that planted around the company office. The ones around my building "arbutus Marina"/Strawberry Tree - the trunks are almost upright and don't have that multi-trunk growth. The dead giveaway is that peeling bark with the smooth candy cane striped red/yellow bark underneath(all the arbutus trees around here are peeling) so I believe those are arbutus trees, but not necessarily the 'Marina' variety.

That bark is pretty unusual for a tatarian maple....no?? Sources say mature trees will have ridged or plated bark but not that any coloring will be so distinct. I have never seen one with such a strong light/dark contrast like that. It being Acer tataricum makes a lot more sense with a Reno location :-))

It's a Platycladus orientalis, aka Oriental arborvitae. You don't trim it - it doesn't require it and any pruning or trimming will destroy the growth habit.

Hi Bill,

It's from Africa but if you remember we used to see a huge specimen of one of these at the Bot. Gardens during our "inspections" just outside the azalea beds. Its common name is Kaffir plum -- don't know if it's edible though.
