About a week but they spend quite a while on top of the jelly before actually leaving the jelly and swimming free.
I havent had any fresh spawn in a week, then yesterday morning there was a fresh clump in the fish pond.

Alas, no frogs or spawn here.

Females will spawn with no present, but the eggs won't hatch. Remove as many of them as you can. Returning the eggs to the pond will make ammonia levels go back up as they begin to decay, and you sure don't need that!

Thanks Anne and Sleepless. I buried Missy the Sarasa Comet. I don't know all that much about pond fish diseases, but comparing to a write up on GAB boards, the only thing I saw was indications of Ich. I did do a significant water change (more than 25% less than 50%), took out the plants, cleaned out various muck and salted for disease. Now, my questions are two part - when can I put my lilies back in and should I be 'buffering' the pond with some crushed coral? Everything I read about salt being bad for lilies is why I'm wanting to test my salinity levels. I know that salt doesn't evaporate, but I'm unclear on how long to leave the water salty before I do water changes. The 3 remaining are looking and acting normally. I can't see any indications of Ich (not that I can see them all the upclose and personal like). Oh, and I definitely have at least one small gray fry swimming around in the pond. Still can't believe my crew of feeder fish is old enough to spawn. ~dianne

They have spawned! Glad I posted to get them started, lol Thanks for the advice about the water change. We had a big thunderstorm, maybe that did it.

Yes, I do this each year with one clump of frog spawn. I change a jugful of water each day after the spawn are wriggling freely. Any tadpoles taken up into the jug are put in a bucket outside. eventualy i end up with about seven in my mini aquarium. I very rarely have any deaths. one year, I put a mini aquarium of about 12 inches inside one of about 24 inches and put a turf of grass in the larger aquarium with a fine mesh lid. I was able to watch as the froglets left the "mini" and fended for themselves in the larger aquarium. I would thrash about in the bushes with a fine net in order to get midge, flies and other small beatles and fed them daily. It was very interesting to watch the children perfect their flycatching skills. Dave

Northern Irish tadpoles must be very keen, mine take ages to hatch--the ones laid in early March are only just hatching! So I guess they hatch, when they hatch!

Local frogs don't know what they are missing Kazzie...5 star accomodation! Hopefully by next year they will get the message.

Hi, i havnt been on here since last spring, i dont think.

I dont have any frogspawn in my pond, but there was some in a nearby ditch that was drying out, so i rescued it and put it in a bucket. A couple of the tadpoles have hatched, but seemed to fall strait to the bottom of the bucket, apparently dead! Having read more about them, i'm worried they could have been knocked off the jelly too early, if the bucket was disturbed.
How long do they stay on the jelly before swimming free?

Until its all gone or they get knocked off.
They will probably find something else to eat instead
they can escape predators easier in the jelly though.

Hi, mine was laid 16 to 19 March, and today it is almost fully hatched. Most are still on.top of the spawn but some are free swimming with their gills showing.

Yes, I've got thousands swimming about today
They must have come out for a bit of sunbathing.

I saw my first tadpole swimming away yesterday. They were laid the same week as dampflippers. Scarlettt did you put anything in the bucket for the tadpoles to rest on or to eat? How is your pond now, and did you ever get your mum to let you have a bigger one nearer the house as you wanted?

wow, im suprised you remember me!
yeah, i put some elodea and some watercress in, but so far any that have left the jelly are just sticking on the side of the bucket.
My pond is ok, it looks a total mess just because im too lazy to look after things propperly, but its full of life and all the plants are growing well.
The pond near the house never happened *sigh* but its being talked about again now :-D
