garden half over growing with bramnles

i have just moved in to a new home and halfthe garden is over growing with brambles.As any one got any ideas how best to get rid of these brambles?

Dig them up. Burn the brambles (or take them to the tip - don't compost them.) Repeat. :)

Worked for us! It looks daunting, but you get there eventually..

I agree. Dig them up. We had to do that in our garden (and discovered skip-loads of buried rubble to add to the fun). Digging enables you to get to know your soil, too.

Connie, you can buy pink insulation in rolls that are about 10" wide and just unwind it as you roll it around the pipes. This method takes longer then... Also there is insulation that comes in a long black tube with a slit up one side. Just open the tube and slip it over your heat tape and water pipe. Cut the tube in the lengths you need. You do have to make sure that all the water pipe is totally closed in or the slightest wind at an exposed area will freeze your pipe. Canadian Tire heat tapes can last as little as a few days to 10 years. Some people put two tapes on at the beginning and then when one goes they just plug the other one in. I grew 3 kinds of greasy cutshorts and even the ones I got planted late still produced. But there are heirloom pole beans that will produce much earlier up here, like Grandma Robert's Purple, Jeminez, and Uncle Steve's pole beans. However, there are some kinds of beans like lima beans that do well in the South where they get a lot of heat that will not do well here. But it's not over here with the bean vines until frost. My pole beans are starting to hit the top of the trellis and only beginning to bloom, but it won't be long until the beans form, I can't wait. There are some cold-tolerant bush beans that can be planted around April 15-30 that can extend the bean season. Pole beans usually have to wait until May 15-June 15 to be planted. If you want a really early bean you should try growing Fava beans. They are very cold tolerant and can be planted as early as Feb. 15. They taste quite a lot like a nice fat mealy lima bean, especially if you pop the skins off before eating.

Greetings: Many years ago when just out of college, I worked at a small greenhouse. We had plants in clay pots and plastic pots (geranium, Dracaena ect). These days, nobody would commercially grow in clay pots. To heavy to ship,move ect. However, it was interesting to see the same crop in clay versus plastic. Those in clay were just a little bigger, healthier looking and definitely seemed better compared to those in the plastic pots. Cooler roots with clay? Better root system with clay? I wonder if the wood whiskey barrels work the same. Cooler roots? I use plastic these days too as the big plastic tubs are way cheaper and more available than wood barrels. The issue came up again when working at a garden center years ago that potted bare-root shrubs into fiber pots. When the pots ran out, we switched to plastic pots. The fiber pots produced a nicer plant sooner. Plastic works but is not always the best container for the plant. Just cheaper, more available and convenient since it does not rot away.

I hear ya, everyone has different setups and different needs, and this "hobby" can cost you. If you have your plants in a major living space of a home, your automatically cash screwed since everything has to look "more decent", from pots to tables to watering cans to lights (tool and accessory storage?). If you grow in a greenhouse, remote spare room or basement you can get away with more. Some houses are detached, attached, semi-detached brick wood or other as far as excess heat goes. I grow inside my basement in the winter using 1 fluorescent and 1 LED strip fixture hanging from chains over a table. I also have clip on spotlights for plant bottoms. I will go all LED once the bulbs go dimmer in one fixture. The main thing I'm pointing out is that fluorescent bulbs have issues and are being phased out slowly and have disposal problems, I'm getting rid of them slowly throughout the entire 6 family by converting existing fixtures. The conversion price and technology is here, enough to grow by converting ANY old existing fluorescent light fixture to LED by disconnecting the ballasts and direct wire to new clips, rudimentary electrical skills required. Wattage is reduced by 50% and they are brighter and last longer. Meaning if you see a strip fixture in the trash, there's a potential candidate for someone to retrofit. if you go to the grow light forum, its too wacky for me. Guys that want to build light fixtures (use this or that chip/diode and debate the merits)and guys that want to show off the latest $500 toy. If your just looking to start some seedlings and get Citrus through winter with growth its an option.....

Brambles can appear at first glance to be very daunting to get rid of, but with the right approach can be dispatched in one go. The good thing is once they are gone, they stay gone. That is, they are not like other perennial weeds like creeping thistle or bindweed which, despite your best efforts, can often persist for many years.

Cut down all the top growth first, with a slasher (like a machete on a long pole) or using a grass hook. Then methodically dig out and remove the stumps. That's it! You'll never see them again. But only as long as the stumps are completely dug out Â if you keep cutting a bramble down, it only regrows with renewed vigour. Sometimes (this is very rare) if a thick piece of briar root is left in the ground, it will send up a sucker. These are usually quite weak and can be easily removed if they appear.

Having spent rather a lot of time clearing out so many brambles we half expected to find Sleeping Beautys castle (the entire garden front and back covering the bottom floor windows) I can attest to the fact that they don't grow back from the roots all that often and digging them out is pretty much the only way to get rid of them.

That's not to say that seedlings don't still pop up in abundance years later and need to be dealt with lest they grow into monsters months on. We pulled the originals out 9 or 10 years ago now and still have to deal with the offspring although it's easier to hand weed them when they are small than dig out the roots.

Are 'bramnles' quite similar to brambles but with not so many bees buzzing about them? I don't think we have any on this side of the lake.

We do have brambles though. Hellish greenbrier. I find they need very acid soil to thrive, so a heavy dosing of wood-ash every year helps discourage them and encourage weeds that crowd the brambles.

But mine have very nice 'jacks' (like gladioli) growing amongst them. Rather nice to destroy them too?
