The following is my TOMATO MASTER. Everything but those at the foot of the copy are at the second transplant stage. I am heading away for a week soon. So I plan on a second sowing with those varieties listed under the heading below that reads: Second Sowing.

At the end I have compiled a list of what you and Craig have sent me this year. If there is anything in particular that you would like me to grow please indicate that and I will add it to the second sowing.

Quite a few of my seedlings are earlies or destined for pots and they will be replaced with those from a second sowing. I also have to make two new beds on the lawn. Will head to hardware for timber edging soon.

I haven't done nearly so well with germination this year as in the previous 2 years for the older seeds - my desk lamp heat source is kaput!!! So I soaked the old seeds overnight as usual, but this year I sowed them straight into seedling mix rather than doing my "pre-germination" method in moist cotton Dove squares and keeping them warm 24/7.

No germination after waiting 2 weeks, so I started a few more seeds of each, soaked overnight, then placed them between moist cotton in ziplocs, and sat them on top of the computer monitor. That kept them warm throughout the day, but they cooled off overnight when the computer was off. But thankfully I did get a few to germinate. Some are still likely to germinate hopefully, but I'll give you a more detailed account in the morning of what's up so far. A few of the first sowing did eventually pop up too.

I must get that lamp fixed for next year!

Patrina I use a small heat pad under my seeds, it came from a pet shop & was quite cheap. Bottom heat is supposed to be better for germination than top heat, not sure why though!

Yes, I might have to get a heat pad Sarah. I previously used the lamp as a bottom heat source by lining up the seeds in their moist cotton blankets inside ziplocs along the top of the lamp and on its base. It seemed like the perfect amount of warmth *sigh*

It's certainly a far cry from the more-often-than-not 100% germination I've had previously! In fact, these results compared with the past 2 years suggest to me that the older seeds respond best in an environment of even humidity and warmth 24 hours a day until they sprout and emerge into the light. I'll have to plan better for next year when I try your 1996/97 seeds!

Patrina, who just realised she forgot to sow some F2s of the Mortgage Lifter Pesta Strain Heart from last year... more late tomatoes this season, do'h!

One of my Mary Italian (97) came up out of four I sowed, and one Noire de Coseboeuf (95) came up so far.Also three from four Yasha Yugoslavian (97). All the later varieties germinated.
All too early to tell leaf type, but I'll keep you posted. Thanx for the lovely presents, and good to hear from you.

Could you provide some info on Croatia. Is it a determinate or not etc. I have one up and going well but would like to know something of its growth habit so as to know where to put him.

Update on some of the ones I listed above - another Victorian Dwarf appeared making it 3/8, and the sole Yellow Belgium didn't escape from its seed coat, so that one is now 0/8.

Interestingly, I have several blind seedlings and one "alien", meaning that it has a single antennae type growing tip with a circular leaf on the end - it's one of the Ideals. The blinds with cotyledons only are 3 Golden Ponderosa, 2 Yellow Beauty, 1 Golden Glory and 1 Orange Oxheart.

All seedlings are RL.

Patrina, what do you mean by blind seedlings? Do they just not develop leaves at all?

Hi Guys
Here is my list...but first
I have no electricity, so I rely on a woodstove as a heat source and it does go out during the night

All seeds were soaked in jars of warm water for nearly 15 hrs before being placed into clip lock bags with a little warm water and then puffed up with air (I breath into them and when inflated I clip them shut...each morning I fill the cliplock bag with fresh warm water and immediately drain it off and refill with air...these bags are kept on a screen above the fireplace (the air temp is about 22C during the day ) and can get quite cool at night (we did have a mild frost one night but the kitchen is slightly warm still
So all in all it is not real good conditions but the best I can provide

As soon as some seeds start to sprout I plant all the seeds of that variety into punnets of soil (mix) and place these punnets inside polystyrene corn boxes on the rack above the fire

When the majority of seedlings have opened their cotyledon leaves I bring them into the light (in the polybox in front of the window) and place glass over the box in order to strengthen them...as the day dims I place them back near the fire again

I have successfully germinated about half of the seeds at present and only a few remain unplanted in their punnets

Yes Jen, they only grow their initial cotyledons, and in the middle where the first true leaves should emerge there is nothing. In the pic you'll see them lined up, but in the front is Ideal with its single stem/antennae coming from the centre with a little round green leaf - so weird!

The cotyledons tend to grow a bit thicker than regular ones. Sometimes if you wait long enough, a growing tip eventually emerges. I had one last year that started growing leaves several weeks later.

Actually, it's all a bit difficult to see now that I've reduced the pic size.
