Carolyn's 2005 varieties?????

When Craig and I talked on the phone today he suggested I stop by here b'c I'm more apt to get info about the seeds I sent down to Patrina for redistribution.

So, germination, right/wrong leaf form, you know, all the regular feedback stuff on these varieties. LOL

it might be helpful to indicate the age of the seeds since some were very recent and fresh and others rather old. I wrote the year on each pack I sent down. Such info may well help folks, and me, better understand the germination results.

Thanks for your generosity, interest and expertise, Carolyn.

The following is my TOMATO MASTER. Everything but those at the foot of the copy are at the second transplant stage. I am heading away for a week soon. So I plan on a second sowing with those varieties listed under the heading below that reads: Second Sowing.

At the end I have compiled a list of what you and Craig have sent me this year. If there is anything in particular that you would like me to grow please indicate that and I will add it to the second sowing.

Quite a few of my seedlings are earlies or destined for pots and they will be replaced with those from a second sowing. I also have to make two new beds on the lawn. Will head to hardware for timber edging soon.

What variety can I replant that might have the most mildew resistance? Hard to explain why, but I have maybe 60 different varieties in 4" pots begging to be planted, both heirloom selected for earliness and hybrids selected for disease resistance. So I might have the variety that you would suggest! Thanks a bunch, Gary ***** Gary, I'm not aware of any variety, hybrid or OP, that has any increased tolerance to mildew, of which there are two kinds which can affect the tomatoes of those of you in CA coastal areas. While the most common diseases of tomatoes are the foliage diseases, finding relatively tolerant varieties has not been particularly successful. That is, no genes that would lend significant tolerance if bred in have been IDed to date. The mildews that affect tomatoes are not the same as those that affect roses and Phlox and Zinnias and Monarda, for example, and the thus the Cornell Baking Soda formula does not work. The best thing to do, although I know you don't want to, is to be on a regular spray program with a good anti-fungal such as Ortho Garden Disease Control. Carolyn

Of the varieties you have listed, here is the production top to bottom. All of these are hybrids and will be relatively prodctive. Big Beef is the hands down production winner in the group typically producing 20% to 50% more pounds of fruit than the rest of the hybrids. BIG BEEF BRANDY BOY PORTERHOUSE SUPERSTEAK BEEFY BOY WHOPPER CR LEMON BOY BIG MAMA ROCKY - unknown to me. Here are the heirloom and open pollinated varieties. Of this group, Cherokee Purple and Marianna's Peace will produce the heaviest crop. In some years, I have even had Cherokee Purple outproduce Big Beef which is saying a lot. MARIANNAÂS PEACE - Heavy producer, can make 30 pounds per plant under normal conditions with minimal care. CHEROKEE PURPLE - heavy producer, another 30 lbs per plant. AUNT GERTIES GOLD - Tends to be a light producer for me. 7 or 8 fruits per plant at about a pound each is normal. Further north it tends to produce much more heavily. KELLOGGÂS BKFST - moderate producer with 15 to 20 fruits per plant at about a pound each. I love the flavor and grow it every year! OPALKA - produces long paste type fruit. Typical production is about 15 pounds per plant, but it is variable, in some conditions, it produces little to no fruit. Give it good care and fertile soil to get maximum production. The flavor is worth it! POLISH LINGUISA - Tends to be a moderate to light producer with 10 to 15 pounds per plant. BLACK CHERRY - A heavy producing cherry variety that makes about 20 pounds of fruit per plant and can make a lot more if the soil is fertile enough. This is an excellent flavored tomato. MEXICO - produces 20 to 30 fruits per plant at about a pound each. The only problem is that it is consistently mushy and bland in my garden. Good production, just not good eating IMNSHO. All told, you didn't do too badly for varieties. I would suggest the following as good varieties to try next year. Anna Russian (heart) Daniels (pink potato leaf) Yoder's German Yellow (big tasty yellow/gold) Red Brandywine (high producing red) Burgundy Traveler (very productive deep crimson pink) J.D.'s Special C-Tex (spectacular flavored black) Black From Tula (another outstanding black) Heidi (best of the indeterminate paste varieties) Dr. Carolyn Pink (phenomenally good flavored cherry) Druzba (has intense tomato flavor in a productive red fruited variety) Last but not least, shop around a bit. www.sandhillpreservation.com and www.tomatogrowers.com are excellent places to get seed. Vee, good Lord! You know that I love dialects; but if the whole of The Forge and The Store are written as you've cited, I would be slowed down to a crawl trying to figure out and "hear" the dialect and I wouldn't be able to hold onto the storyline, I'm afraid. George Eliot's Adam Bede did that to me as well, so it's not just American southern dialects. I've read only one Pat Conroy book: The Great Santini. While I liked that one quite well, I thought it got a bit melodramatic and mushy in parts. I remember trying to read a couple of other Conroy books, but I think I recognized the same bit of manipulation and was put off. The Ya-Ya things: I read them and thought yuck! They seem to have been written with a formula to reinforce the stereotypes of southern white women as neurotics and Southern Belle wannabes that non-southerners seem fascinated with. Why? My South Carolinian sister-in-law says that southern writers have created a disproportionate impression in the minds of non-southerners that all southerners are "messed up." She blames the writers and not the readers because, as she says, the readers are only ignorant; the writers know better but choose to exploit the stereotypes, anyway, for "easy sale." All of this has moved from Carolyn's original comments about C. Haines and her books. Carolyn, can you give us a sense of how Haines handles the stereotypical? I'm guessing she must have a different angle or you wouldn't have been impressed. Is that right?

Hi Carolyn

I haven't done nearly so well with germination this year as in the previous 2 years for the older seeds - my desk lamp heat source is kaput!!! So I soaked the old seeds overnight as usual, but this year I sowed them straight into seedling mix rather than doing my "pre-germination" method in moist cotton Dove squares and keeping them warm 24/7.

No germination after waiting 2 weeks, so I started a few more seeds of each, soaked overnight, then placed them between moist cotton in ziplocs, and sat them on top of the computer monitor. That kept them warm throughout the day, but they cooled off overnight when the computer was off. But thankfully I did get a few to germinate. Some are still likely to germinate hopefully, but I'll give you a more detailed account in the morning of what's up so far. A few of the first sowing did eventually pop up too.

I must get that lamp fixed for next year!

Patrina I use a small heat pad under my seeds, it came from a pet shop & was quite cheap. Bottom heat is supposed to be better for germination than top heat, not sure why though!

Yes, I might have to get a heat pad Sarah. I previously used the lamp as a bottom heat source by lining up the seeds in their moist cotton blankets inside ziplocs along the top of the lamp and on its base. It seemed like the perfect amount of warmth *sigh*

Carolyn, I checked out the young seedlings this morning, and here's the germination results:

Golden Ponderosa '95 - 5/8
Golden Glory '95 - 4/8, one of which is damaged
Ideal '95 - 2/8
Noire de C. '95 - 3/8
High Crimson '95 - 3/8
Orange Oxheart '95 - 2/8
Cuor de Bue '95 - 2/8, one of which is damaged
Yellow Belgium '95 - 1/8 maybe, alive but not fully emerged
Victorian Dwarf '95 - 2/8
Peace '95 - 0/8
Mariette '95 - 0/8
Grosse Violette '95 - 0/8

Noire de C. and Ideal only succeeded when pregerminated in moist cotton.

It's certainly a far cry from the more-often-than-not 100% germination I've had previously! In fact, these results compared with the past 2 years suggest to me that the older seeds respond best in an environment of even humidity and warmth 24 hours a day until they sprout and emerge into the light. I'll have to plan better for next year when I try your 1996/97 seeds!

Patrina, who just realised she forgot to sow some F2s of the Mortgage Lifter Pesta Strain Heart from last year... more late tomatoes this season, do'h!

One of my Mary Italian (97) came up out of four I sowed, and one Noire de Coseboeuf (95) came up so far.Also three from four Yasha Yugoslavian (97). All the later varieties germinated.
All too early to tell leaf type, but I'll keep you posted. Thanx for the lovely presents, and good to hear from you.

Could you provide some info on Croatia. Is it a determinate or not etc. I have one up and going well but would like to know something of its growth habit so as to know where to put him.

Update on some of the ones I listed above - another Victorian Dwarf appeared making it 3/8, and the sole Yellow Belgium didn't escape from its seed coat, so that one is now 0/8.

Interestingly, I have several blind seedlings and one "alien", meaning that it has a single antennae type growing tip with a circular leaf on the end - it's one of the Ideals. The blinds with cotyledons only are 3 Golden Ponderosa, 2 Yellow Beauty, 1 Golden Glory and 1 Orange Oxheart.

All seedlings are RL.

Hi Guys
Here is my list...but first
I have no electricity, so I rely on a woodstove as a heat source and it does go out during the night

All seeds were soaked in jars of warm water for nearly 15 hrs before being placed into clip lock bags with a little warm water and then puffed up with air (I breath into them and when inflated I clip them shut...each morning I fill the cliplock bag with fresh warm water and immediately drain it off and refill with air...these bags are kept on a screen above the fireplace (the air temp is about 22C during the day ) and can get quite cool at night (we did have a mild frost one night but the kitchen is slightly warm still
So all in all it is not real good conditions but the best I can provide

As soon as some seeds start to sprout I plant all the seeds of that variety into punnets of soil (mix) and place these punnets inside polystyrene corn boxes on the rack above the fire

When the majority of seedlings have opened their cotyledon leaves I bring them into the light (in the polybox in front of the window) and place glass over the box in order to strengthen them...as the day dims I place them back near the fire again

I have successfully germinated about half of the seeds at present and only a few remain unplanted in their punnets

Yes Jen, they only grow their initial cotyledons, and in the middle where the first true leaves should emerge there is nothing. In the pic you'll see them lined up, but in the front is Ideal with its single stem/antennae coming from the centre with a little round green leaf - so weird!

The cotyledons tend to grow a bit thicker than regular ones. Sometimes if you wait long enough, a growing tip eventually emerges. I had one last year that started growing leaves several weeks later.

Actually, it's all a bit difficult to see now that I've reduced the pic size.
