Craig, Green Giant germinated very well. 2 out of 2. 5 days. They are both potato leaf.

New Big Dwarf - another new one to me. 4 days germination. 3 out of 3. They look really cute. :)

Tennessee Britches - 2 out of 2. 7 days.

Pineapple Fog - 2 out of 2. 5 days.

Will have to check on leaf form later.

Brief report Craig: 2/2 Green Giant, 1/4 Tennessee Britches, 3/4 Mikardo, most of which are only at coty stage (I think, but will wait for daylight to check if any first leaves are peeking out). Not sure if Cherokee green has germinated yet.

G'day. well, I've got Mary italian finally,a cherokee green, Pineapple fog 4 out of 4, Stick....3 from 3, still none of thr pre 1997 ones are up but they take a bit of time. katinka is powering.Yasha, Rinaldo, Phil's fantastic, Rasp Large red and Indian Stripe all powering away.
All up, about 110 plants. EEEEk.

NCTomatoman - Patrina sent me a few lots of seeds - here's the strike rate after 3 weeks:

The tallest seedling is about 3-4cm tall and the leaves are too small to make a definite potato/no potato comparison.

Some of the seedlings were transplanted to their growing spot yesterday - it will be three or four days before the raspberry and the last four in the list will be big enough to transplant.

I'll try to keep this thread informed of what happens.

Hi Craig,
This is the same reply as that which I posted under the title re Carolyn's varieties.

The following is my TOMATO MASTER. Everything but those at the foot of the copy are at the second transplant stage. I am heading away for a week soon. So I plan on a second sowing with those varieties listed under the heading below that reads: Second Sowing.

At the end I have compiled a list of what you have sent me this year. If there is anything in particular that you would like me to grow please indicate that and I will add it to the second sowing.

Quite a few of my seedlings are earlies or destined for pots and they will be replaced with those from a second sowing. I also have to make two new beds on the lawn. Will head to hardware for timber edging soon.

Is Green Giant Regular Leaf? My 2 seedlings have tiny first true leaves peeking out, but they're too early to call. They do look rather straight on the edges and come to a point, as does the first tiny true leaf on Mikado which I'm hoping will turn out to be Potato Leaf.

My 2 Cherokee Greens are RL, as is my only Tennessee Britches.

More to come on leaf forms when I know for sure!

Craig, I just re-read your original post and see that Green Giant should be PL, so that makes me optimistic that I not only have PL Green Giants, but that at least one Mikado is PL too! The other 2 Mikados only have cotyledons at the moment.

Update on the PL varieties Craig - the 2 Green Giant seedlings are definitely PL and the 3 Mikados also. I'm also growing Mikado Scarlet from my Sand Hill seeds, but they are all RL. Originally I had wondered whether they might be the same as your Mikado, so I could have made a comparison between the two.

Great news on Green Giant and Mikado being PL - Mikado Scarlet is another that I dug out of the USDA collection in 1995, and it grew out regular leaf for me, with 8-12 ounce oblate scarlet red fruit of good flavor. I did list it in the SSE for a year or two, and spread it around Garden Web a few years ago - probably how it found its way to Sand Hill.

Here we are in late October, and I am still picking the occasional great tasting Green Giant from a plant growing in a driveway pot that is still essentially completetly healthy! Can't wait to see how it does for you over there...I also will eventually get the pink fruited Mort. Lifter Pesta heart F2 seeds to you - been doing lots of work travel and also training, so am chilling on gardening for the most part over the past month or so (this may be my first GW post in several weeks!).
