Grass tree

Like to let any one interested that i planted a36 inch tall g.plant last november in Florida usa. In December we had record cold and i lost a lot of palms.The grass tree is doing great,and we are now having record high temps.It is mulched very deep,and gets almost a full day of sun.

Arr, you still might not be safe, fleaseyelash, the Aussie grass tree, Xanthorhea sp., can take a year or two to die. If it's still alive in 2 years - and they can live hundreds - consider it's survived.

Chris, We also run our water softener "used" water out of the house with a sump pump. We ran a length of pipe outside, buried about 15" deep. It dumps into a buried steel trashcan that's partially filled with pea gravel to help it hold it's shape. When we first installed the sump, we didn't have the extra pipe attached. Wow, that water comes out fast! It dug a huge whole in the lawn even in winter. To prevent lawn kill, you should use pottassium chloride instead of sodium chloride in your softener. It won't kill any plants, and it will improve the longevity of your sump. (All that salt is hard on the pump.)

sometimes in gardening there are no hard and fast rules and if you are not sure if something will. grow or not well you just have to plant them and see,they do grow in the blue mountains in Australia where it does get a very cold winter and some times snows there.they will grow from seed very easy but they are very slow growing,folk I know made the mistake of using standard potting mixes to grow grass trees and they did not survive,better to plant these in the ground in well drained sandy soil and just let nature do the rest,they are not an easy plant to grow in a pot

By the way, mine are seed grown and haven't yet put on stems below the leaves. Both have multiplied their heads and are not quite as attractive as when they had single stems - what they really need is a good fire through them. Alternatively cutting way back, but I reckon fire is better, it's more natural for them. Also, a purchased 'bush' collected specimen (anything up to $200 plus) by a licensed collector, can take up to 2 years to die: they can be transplanted but care needs to be taken to disturb the roots as little as possible. Hi, I don't currently have any boab but might have other things (or plants) that would interest you. Firstly what area are you in Qld - tropical or semi, dry or wet. Secondly in broad terms are you interested in natives or exotics or both, thirdly are you restricted in size - I mean are you acreage or residential plot and do you have a preference for planting our or growing potted specimens Fourthly what do you mean by "Parrot Tree" as that could be a number of things. Well that is good news. I like to hear about Aussies doing well overseas !

What is the soil like that you have your grass tree in ?

Have you seen the flower yet ? That is just beautiful.

I have been to a native forest north of Sydney where there is a forest of Xanthorreahs (grass trees), with Sydney Red Gums, and Macrozamias. Just spectacular ! When the grass trees are flowering it is the most glorious place.
