Greenmount Garden Needs Your Help

Hi There,

My name's Mat Marsters, and I'm a researcher for the BBC Northern Ireland Gardening television gardening series Greenmount Garden. We've just started production of the second series of this successful series and we are looking for people based in Northern Ireland to take part in the show.

The Greenmount GardenÂs team of gardening experts will be bringing you more Northern Ireland based gardens and gardeners with advice and practical hands on, down to earth information and hints and tips invaluable to gardeners at all levels of experience.

We are looking for people to take part in the following items.

* Are you unhappy with the state of your front garden? Is the front of your house distinctly lacking in horticultural features? Could sorting out your front garden even add value to your property? If so, then let us know, and expert landscape designer and property developer Colin Donaldson could help. Colin will be travelling the length and breadth of Northern Ireland in an effort to increase your "Kerb Appeal".

* Do you know of any beautiful or unusual gardens? We want to hear about gardens that we could visit during the series. If you Â or someone you know Â has a garden to be proud of, tell us about it. Every week Cherrie McIlwaine will be visiting a local gardening enthusiast to share their passions, trials and successes and hopefully provide a bit of inspiration for gardeners across the country.

* Got a gardening problem? We want to hear from keen gardeners who have an obstacle to overcome. Last year we tackled everything, from a thorny problem with a fairy tree to a chaotic city garden and even managed to bring a touch of the tropical to a dull corner of Co. Down. Contact us with your own unique problem and you could soon have gardening expert John Cushnie and the Greenmount Garden team along to help you find a solution.

I am zone 5 - Valentine is good. It is a low grower for me and it has no scent but that darn thing does not stop blooming. I have 4 plants of it. I also have a cutie that I originally got from chamblees but they no longer stock it - ARE does I think: Pink rosette - cutest darn little floribunda rose. Also the david austin english roses do really well here. They are a mixed bag as far as rebloom. But I do say this - they kind of quit late july august when it gets really hot. But the japanese beetles are at their peak here, so it is a plus that you don't have to go out and cut the flowers and bring them in if don't want a big gross infestation on one bud. The english roses also are the latest to keep blooming though and come into their own when the temps cool down. I recommend at least one austin english rose. I like the austin english rose: "heritage" as it has a great scent. Although mine is grafted - not from chamblees. I got austin's the generous gardener from chamblees own root and that thing is very vigorous and very cold hardy. We had -21F here this winter. and the canes are mostly green still! I recommend buck roses - I like carefree beauty, and prairie star is a good white which looks like a hybrid tea and makes a good cut flower as it has longer stems. Although rebloom could be better on that. Nice scent - kind of citrusy and light. There are some buck varietes that have failed for me though.

Maybe you can divide your garden into 8 more or less equal squares, and start with one, piling whatever OM you can get into it, then, when you get enough that you think it'll last throught he growing season, continue to another section. Depending on the response to your ads to freecycle and craigslist (and I'd try both), you may get enough to do more than one section. Unfortunately, the OM will reduce in volume every year, so you'll need to add more to the sections you've already been able to plant in every year. So, as time goes on, you'll be establishing new areas, but also needing to maintain the existing areas. You mentioned customers who are sheep and horse farmers. I used to work with somebody who had several horses and paid to have his manure hauled away. You should let your customers know that if they have friends who need manure hauled off, you're willing to haul it for free. Freecycle and craigslist may get you some as well. Several people have already mentioned tree trimming companies. I'd second that, and also point you to the utility companies. The utility companies may trim trees themselves around power lines, or they may contract the work done. If they do the work themselves, they'll probably be glad to give you truckloads of chipped wood. If they contract it, they can tell you the companies with which they contract. If you google ramial wood, you'll find that chipped wood is being used to regenerate soil. Good luck, and please keep us posted on your results.

I remember reading somewhere that yellow houses are appealing to buyers. I do like #1, and it might work with a deep plum colored door. I prefer #4 to the grayer browns (in #2 & 3) because it works better with the color of your roof. I don't care for the door color in #1 & 6 ... looks like cat s**t brown to me! But a door is easy to paint and that could be changed right before you list. Your front door looks much better with the semi-circular area over it painted the same color as the trim, instead of the siding color, imo.

Gainesville area gardeners, need your help

Yes . I live 90 miles south of Gainesville . Here I would pot up the Plumeria and Crown of Thorns since they are tropicals . The EE - in ground they survive here but not the delicate more tropical ones . They do freeze to the ground and look very sad but bounce back . In Alachua County --- ? I am not sure .
