Drew, as it happens I was WRONG, WRONG, WRONG. It is not a Corymbia at all, but Eucalyptus cladocalyx (sugar gum). Apparently it is common in California, but being native to South Australia, I've never seen one. I checked it with my expert friend Gus from Spain on Hardy Eucalyptus Board. The capsules are actually too narrow for C. maculata, even though they are the same general shape. Apparently the buds of sugar gum grow in clusters of 7 or more from a single point, which then becomes a peduncle as it grows out from the stem. The bark is also not a perfect match with C. maculata, being not as closely mottled. There may be wind events or prominent winds that have caused the eucalypts in your part of NC/SC to be leaning. Windy landscapes in sandy soils can result in different things than those in heavier clay soils. I've seen massive eucalypts that have full and rounded crowns without any leaning in both the Charlotte and Clemson areas. I'm pretty turned off by your comment, butterfly. Really? Eucalyptus is ONE plant? Do you talk of all oaks or maples in the same breath as all growing and tolerating and doing the same things in a landscape? Much like oaks span the entire North American continent in different soil types and climatic regimes, so too do the Eucalyptus and Corymbia of Australia. Some are water lovers (like river red gum), others are truly arid plants, and others from the Australian alps around Canberra. Until we know WHICH eucaylpt is in question, glittering generalities are really unnecessary and only proliferates bad information (which also is widespread across the web). ANYONE can blog or publish on the web and it may be read as fact; especially bad are the comments of half-truths or statements that are not clarified or better explained. Yes, wax myrtle is a great native plant. It also is becoming increasingly susceptible to lac lobate scale that is moving northward.

Living in Australia its native habitat, Lemon Eucalyptus is actually the weakest of the lemon scented trees. There are far better varieties to try. Backhousia citriodora. Lemon Mytrle. This tree in summer permeates a lemonade aroma which is delicious. Edible flowers and leaves as well. Leptospermum Petersonii. Lemon tea tree, again edible flowers and leaves, the scent of this is so strong it actually 'blinds' mosquitos sense of smell, and masks our own BO. Acronychia acidula. Lemon Aspen, can be quite heady and again is edible this time the berries, which are slightly like lemon zest to taste. These three trees leave the old Lemon scented gum for dead fragrance wise when it comes to quality of aroma and quantity. Also there has been a fairly recent classification (possibly Eucalyptus Ollida) of a new tree here called a strawberry gum, though some people say its a corymbia not a Eucalypt. Found in the Gibraltor Ranges it gives off an extremely moreish strong strawberry scent.

I'm thinking that E.rhodantha and E.phoenicea would be hard to get in seed or plant form. Also, the latter is from tropical parts so make sure you have the right conditions. On the other hand, E. caesia and Corymbia ficifolia are both easily attainable and very attractive trees. E. caesia does have a tendency to blow over and be a little fragile but has a lovely white bark and lovely large colorful gum nuts. C. ficifolia is attainable in many colors including orange but color is flukey from seed. To ensure orange you need to obtain a grafted variety (normally grafted onto itself). The orange variety is called E. 'Orange Splendor' but there is also a E.'Dwarf Orange' which I assume is orange but only grows to 3m (hence the dwarf. E.'Summertime' is a red-orange. You can get pink, red and crimson verieties as well. Depending on exactly what you want either of these would be very nice. Excuse the nomenclature. Even though ficifolia is from the Corymbia genus the grafted varieties in nurseries are called Eucalyptus and then the variety name. Hope I haven't confused anyone. Sorry Artie but I think you could easily grow many eucalypt species including C. ficifolia and E.caesia closer to your house than 30m, especially the dwarf forms of C. ficifolia. Point no.1 is quite valid for a typical suburban block.
