Identification of Eucalyptus

Can anyone identify this Eucalyptus and if seed stratification is required if any and how long for. It has yellow flowers

Drew, as it happens I was WRONG, WRONG, WRONG. It is not a Corymbia at all, but Eucalyptus cladocalyx (sugar gum). Apparently it is common in California, but being native to South Australia, I've never seen one. I checked it with my expert friend Gus from Spain on Hardy Eucalyptus Board. The capsules are actually too narrow for C. maculata, even though they are the same general shape. Apparently the buds of sugar gum grow in clusters of 7 or more from a single point, which then becomes a peduncle as it grows out from the stem. The bark is also not a perfect match with C. maculata, being not as closely mottled. There are hundreds of species, similar ones often distinguished by details of parts such as fruits, flowers and leaves. Looking at internet photos alone may not produce the same species, or result in a false identification - unless species of interest is very distinctive and commonly planted. Comparing parts of tree being wondered about with those in a nearby labeled collection might turn up a useful lead. Always follow up with reading serious written descriptions.

Hello Mistymorn, I had a look at Alex George's "The Banksia Book" and my guess is it is either the B. pilostylis or the B. ashbyi. It would help if you had a photo of the seed cone - George's illustrations and text appear to indicate the follicles are far more numerous for the B. ashbyi. Good luck, Frank

Not enough information to go on, I'm afraid, jersey_jon. Are you able to post a photo of the plant, leaves, fruits, flowers, bark, the situation in which it's growing, surrounding vegetation? The more information the better for identification purposes. Also, it's unlikely the leaves would smell like a Eucalyptus or Acacia. I'm unfamiliar with any Acacia leaves which smell like a Eucalyptus, the leaves of which have a distinct odour. They smell, well, just like a Eucalyptus!

Can you post any pictures of leaf, buds and fruit against a measuring tape?

I need all 3 to really tell.

Does that smooth bark persist to the upper branches?

It does have the smooth bark on the upper branches. Is the bud the gum nut? Fruit? I can't reach even the lower branches to get the leaves, buds and fruit.

FWIW, none of the frost hardy eucalyptus species (which would also be the ones most likely to require some kind of cold stratification) have yellow flowers so most likely the seed needs no cool period for germination. just guessing but the comparatively large size of the plant MIGHT indicate e. stricklandii one of the larger of the yellow-flowered species.

or just maybe it might be e. burdettiana (normally a mallee but can grow larger under cultivation) or megacornutta????!!!!!

the buds are the unopened flowers. the fruit is the gumnut.

chuck a rope up their and try pull some down.
