#1 looks like Turk's cap hibiscus, a native plant.
#2 looks like the very invasive Chinese tallow tree, a weed.
#4 is a crepe myrtle.
#5 looks like an agave.

Where are you located, by the way. Sometimes that helps to know.

Yes, there are weed trees just like there are weed annuals and weed perennials. Leaving them in place just creates more of them in your yard, your neighbor's yard and other areas.

#6 is a Rubus -- a blackberry or raspberry. It may or may not have fruit that's worth eating -- there are a lot of species of Rubus, and they can be very difficult to identify.

I beleive #5 is an Agave parryi...Common name Century Plant. It takes a long time to bloom...I have actually seen one in bloom. It was beautiful!

Janet, I thought that might be a rubus, but then I believed that was wishful thinking after second guessing myself. The irony is that I told my husband I thought it was either a blackberry or raspberry, but then I even added, "I don't know... probably not if my luck holds." ;)

Jeannie, I appreciate the link. :) I don't mind having it, but it's in the dead center of the yard! Either I want to move it to the back where I'm going to create a little flower garden or give it to someone. You're definitely right though. There is no doubt that it's a Century.

Does anyone have any advice about that Tallow? I did some research yesterday and that Tallow tree is listed in the top 10 most invasive plants in Alabama. :( It's too bad because it really is lovely. I can easily see though how it would spread because those seeds fall off by the bazillion.

#2 pic, a "Chinese Tallow Tree" as someone called it here, well we have those all over here. It's a tree here, not known as a weed, and those green balls on it will turn brown/black later and fall off and the shell will crack open and God help you if you walk on them barefoot!!!!! LOL We grew up calling them "money trees' and even recently I have heard them called "chicken trees" but the Chinese Tallow tree is probably the official name. Pic #6 looks like a blackberry bush to me, we have them here too. I would just pull that up tho and get rid of it. Its not an attractive thing and hurts to the touch. Good Luck with your gardening.

For those of you that have never heard of "weed trees", here's a post in the Trees Forum.

Since your trees are big, magnoliasouth, you'd have to cut them down with a chainsaw and then apply herbicide to the outer bark layer (the new growth is in a thin layer under the bark). You need a brush killer to do this. Grinding out the stumps might help also.

You could also ask for advice by calling your local office for the Alabama Cooperative Extension Service.

esh_ga, thanks very much for the links. I believe you and I sincerely apologize if I sounded skeptical. ;) As a new gardener, I was very surprised to find that there are trees out there, which are considered weeds. Yet once I thought about it, it was actually embarrassing to think that I was even surprised. Of course there are!

magnoliasouth, I never thought that about you at all! Unfortunately the South is home to many weed trees. We don't have Tallow tree that I've heard of in north Georgia, but we are covered up in mimosa and "tree of heaven". I have heard the folks in Florida and Texas complain about Tallow tree (and a bunch of others) though.

The Agave is indeed Agave americana. Agave parryi is much smaller, and less commonly grown.
