GMF's Quartered Safe Out Here is an excellent description of his time as a young man serving with the 'forgotten Army' in Burma 1944/45. Learning to live alongside much older tougher men from a Borders regiment, the primitive conditions, the boredom and the short burst of action and fear are all so well recorded you become hot, sweaty and itchy just reading it.

I read Quartered Safe Out Here a few years ago, and still own a copy. Years ago, I considered stealing a collection of his stories, sold in the U.S. as The General Danced at Dawn from a local library - I was afraid it would be culled, which I thought was a tremendous shame. It has been out of print here for many years. I did not steal it, but returned it to the shelves. That was a few years and three thousand miles away, but I was pleased to come home with a copy of the same story collection from my now-local library. I have re-read most of them. Fraser's wit leaps off the page, and he is able to describe military life so well that even a civilian like myself can picture it clearly.

It seems Fraser's death has kindled (or re-kindled) interest in his books. I have had a couple of Flashman books listed on BookMooch for months and they both got mooched within a few days of his death.

I have been dipping into The General Danced at Dawn on and off for the last several months and like it, but somehow I never got to like Flashman.
