Strawberry Tips

Please - I am desperate for strawberry growing tips. I have planted about 12 plants and they don't seem to be growing. I planted them in compost. I have thrived them. I don't know if I should put manure around them.

Any advice most appreciated.

When did you plant them?
I'm just wondering if it's a bit soon for any growth, I'm not sure how warm it is at your place but it's only just warming up here. I wouldn't expect much to happen for a few weeks yet.
It's sounds as though they've received lots of tender loving care so I'm sure you'll be rewarded.

Strawbs won't say no to more manure, as long as it's not raw. It sounds to me like they've been well fed though. They like a good mulch around them too. I've used straw (very traditional) and ti-tree mulch. They liked both. The big plus is that the strawbs stay fairly clean.

I have several strawberry pots - the big terracotta ones with many holes on the sides for the plants and a planting area at the top - and several generic pots of various sizes, including a hanging pot. The first lot of a dozen small strawberry plants last year turned into many dozen this year after they put out runners which I clipped and planted. Now they have a lot of fruit coming along and are growing vigorously despite this being a very dry winter. The key with the strawberry pots is water - you can't get enough water to the roots via the little plant holes on the sides with plants sticking out of them. So I installed a small terra cotta pot in the center of the top, flush with the soil surface and balanced on another pot that was upside down inside the pot, and water heavily through them, so the water gets deep inside the pot to the plant roots. Next one I put together I think I'll use an old one liter milk bottle with holes poked in it, to get slightly better water distribution. The plants in other more normal pots just need regular water. Anyway the strawberry pots are suited to the task and handle a lot of plants in a smallish footprint. HTH sb

First let me say I love your house. My dream is to someday own a little bungalow!! I almost bought one once but it needed more work that I was willing to do at the time. I know I am late to the party, and I am no landscape expert, but I'm going to chime in my .02 anyway. One of the biggest problems I think you have, in more ways than one, are those huge everygreen shrubs against the foundation. They will dwarf anything else you are doing and it will all look kind of washed out. It seems to me your vision is for a wonderful little perrenial flower garden in front of your house, and in the meantime you have behemouth shrubs to deal with. I would seriously consider taking them out and plant something more open, airy and smaller. There are excellent selections of small, open evergreens at high quality nurseries now days, many of them bred to grow small because your situation is pretty typical of what modern home owners are looking for. At the very least, I would take out the big shrub next to the steps. I had a similar shrub next to the porch stairs in a house I lived in once, and it was a major pain to maintain. An evergreen such as that will trap moisture (especially melting snow) up by the house and the railing and the stairs, all contributing to their faster decline--rust, corrosion and weathering of concrete. There is nothing ugly about your foundation that you need to particularly hide. Rip out that big shrub, and put in something light and airy and flowery. Or at the very least, extend the smaller shrub border all the way to the steps. But honestly, I'd bite the bullet and tear it all out, then you will have a clean slate to design YOUR garden the way YOU want it, not have to work around those ponderous shrubs that someone long gone planted because they just filled a spot. They have overgrown their welcome, IMHO.

Calcium deficiency affects the newest cells, not the oldest. For whatever reason, those plants aren't getting enough water to the leaves. Perhaps related to the porous pot?

I finally called since I hadn't gotten a reply to my email 2 days ago. They'll let me pay by the week up to max $200 (thanks for suggesting that!) and will also let me have same spot each week (not necessarily same spot in Aug as June if I skip July, but at least the same spot every week once I start coming every week or so). They have a lot of farmers coming just a couple of times a month. June 19 - grape jelly, maybe tomato plants, strawberries (tips just starting to color up now, when will they be ripe?) and salad greens, radishes, maybe baby carrots? Oregano (I need to thin mine, maybe bring small pots?). I can also bring blueberry and blackberry preserves made from frozen berries. June 25 - maybe blueberries, basil? Salad greens if they don't bolt? Radishes and/or carrots? July 3 -skip? Unless I have lots of blueberries July 10, 17 skip? July 24 - maybe squash, cukes, wild blackberries, raspberries, dill, basil? July 30 - Squash, cukes, blackberries, raspberries (?) early tomatoes, herbs August and Sept - keep up with the squash, cukes, more tomatoes, also should have green beans and then edamame. Could also plant some more kale and other greens, carrots to have for Sept market? Jam and jelly fro leftover berries. Season ends Sept 25.

As Raymondo says, strawberries love lots of feeding but be careful you don't overdo nitrogen or you may get more leaves than fruit.

As Sarah says, it is possibly still too cold over your way. I don't know what your temps are. My strawberries are fruiting beautifully at the moment but it is warmer up here.

I don't do a lot to mine except add compost, manure, mulch well and water when dry. If the fruit start getting small, I water with liquid manure or similar.

when did you plant them? they take a little while to settle in and develop some roots and then theyll take off. the weather is warm enough for them and mine have fruit coming along, but if youve only just planted them, youll just need to give them a bit longer to get going.

too much tlc??

I got half a dozen runners last year from a mate and just stuck them in. As they created new runners _ transplanted them around the garden

they are growing in full sun, under a palm, in my "wet lands"(run off from neighbours - where my fernery and brahmi patch is, competing healthily with a vigorous patch of mint, growing under fruit trees - anywhere there is a bare patch of soil.

The crop isn't great - about 20 strawbs a day- but they are nearly all big and delicious

they get an occassional feed of seaweed spray but that's all.

the strawbs in the wet lands and under the palm don't get any regular watering - the others - get what the vegie patches get.

Thanks all. Maybe it is the weather. We're a month and a half into spring, and we are still getting rainy windy days, with temps not much over 20 degrees during the days and around 10 degrees at night.

I will try and be patient.

20 strawbs a day?? That would be heaven.

Maybe there's room for more !!
