Can it be saved?

About 18 months ago we had our small back garden turfed (turf on rolls). My husband cared for it meticulously (mowing, watering, feeding etc) and it established beautifully. This autumn when our huge Ginko shed its leaves and smelly fruits, we didn't rake it all up promptly (due to the arrival of a baby!) as we had done the previous autumn. I just raked up all the leaves and underneath lies a disaster!Just mud and not much grass left, the mud seems to be the result of an enormous amount of wormcasts, and leaves on top causing suffocation. Will the roots have survived? What should I do? Please, all replies are appreciated..

Thanks,

Linnea
