It was pretty nippy out the night that I bought them....won't be buying plants late at night again! So I am hoping that I have now fixed the problem. I potted them into too large of a pot plus too much water....when I pulled them to downsize to smaller pots tonight there was defintitely standing water in the bottom (but no root rot yet YEAH!)....so I also changed from plastic to terra cotta which should help with transpiration...took it light on the watering this time since we are in the middle of winter. Plus put pebbles in terra cotta saucers with a little water to go under the plants and help with humidity. I also downsized the other dracaena and the maranta which I had purchased a week prior to the other two dracaenas...the maranta had standing water in it which could explain why I was losing some of the red color on it...the dracaena which I said was the healthiest looking of the three had the driest soil and no blemishes. So I will be crossing my fingers to see if that was the problem...if not I probably have a fungus problem, but only time will tell I guess. So as a newbie to house plants, I guess I have a lot to learn....went and got a book on houseplants and today picked up an iresine herbstii, a peperomia caperata, a peperomia obtusifolia, and a handful of cacti and succulents (haworthia, crassula, aloe, drunkard's dream)....they are all babies so at least if I kill them all I didn't spend a fortune. And I had the pleasure of realizing during the process of potting down tonight, that the maranta and the dracaenas have all grown since I purchased them. But they all look much better in appropriate sized terra cotta pots. Wish me luck on my new adventures with houseplants!

Hi Summit. I had a similar problem this winter. I bought a Striped Dracaena at the grocery store. It was out no longer than 3 minutes. From door to a warm car. That night the temp was about 3F. By the time we got home, most leaves were frostbitten. They had a gray-brown color, and felt soft. I clipped them off, thankfully new growth is normal. IMO most if not all Dracaenas are cold sensitive, so temps before 32F will freeze a plant in minutes. How cold do you think the window gets? Did you ever check the temp there? Unless your window was opened, or leaks air, even on the coldest nights, a plant shouldn't frost indoors. (My front windows leak air, we place towels underneath all winter, sthere were times plants frosted) If seeping cold air isn't the problem then it's possible Dracaena roots iced over. Do you keep soil wet? They only need water when soil dries. Also, if an area gets cold at night, it's best watering in the morning, so a newly watered plant doesn't sit overnight in the cold. I lost a Sago Palm and Pachypodium/Madagascar Palm Cactus watering at night, because the area leaked cold air. If leaves are yellowing, there's a chance you're overwatering. Unfortunately, marred foliage will not turn green, nor, on a JC will new leaves grow. So, you have two options. Either let the JC grow as is, (palm-like) or cut in 3" sections, and root. What do you think you'll do? One more thing. This probably isn't the cause, but have you checked for plant bugs? Toni

Stillwater. What conditions was your D. 'Janet Craig' getting at your friends workplace? In other words, amount of light, waterings, fertilizing and size of pot? It looks to be underwatered. Too much sun and not enough liquid. If it's rootbound, most likely soil dried one too many times. D. JC is fast-growing, compared to other Dracaenas. Roots can fill a pot months after being repotted. In order to save the 3 Dracaenas, they'll need work. Are your Dracaenas potted in one or three containers? Remove Dracaenas from pot/s. Is/are they rootbound? If possible, hose roots, trunks, foliage, remove excess soil. Prune dead roots..those that look limp. Do you intend on potting each plant separately or together in one large container? Repot in fresh, well-draining soil. What type of soil/mix do you normally use? After Dracaenas are standing erect, work on the leaves. Those that are all brown, remove. They will not revert to green. Any leaves that have severe brown spots should be removed too. Brown edges can be trimmed. Leave 1/8th" of brown on the leaf/ves, otherwise brown might spread. Pot must have drainage holes. Water thoroughly until water seeps out of holes. Place your plant/s in bright, indirect sun..a cooler room is best. If the room is 85F during the day, and 75F at night, it's still a tad too warm, but as long as your plant isn't in direct sun it should be okay. Wash or mist leaves daily. A week or so after repotting add half-strength, All-Purpose fertilizer. Soil should dry between waterings, but not to the point it cracks. Water when it looks a little crumbly. I can't suggest a watering date; watering should not be done by schedule. For any plant. There is no such thing as water 'X' plant once a week or every three days. Water should be given when soil is moderately moist, dry or super dry depending on the type of plant. If possible, placing your Dracaena in the tub and hosing leaves will perk it up. D. 'Janet Craig' is a pretty plant, and with proper care will develope fragrant flowers during winter months. You have other options like cutting leaves back and root pruning. The decision is up to you. If they were my plants, I'd plant all 3 together in one large container, 'compact' and hope for the best. Good luck, Toni

It may not recover from the frost, but if you want to try, cut off all the dead or damaged leaves. Cut the brown stalks down as far as you have to until the center of the stalk looks firm and healthy and alive, not brown. Repot ASAP as these roots do not like to be soggy - remove all old soil gently and use a fresh, well-drained soilless potting mix. Water until a little comes out the drainage holes, then don't water again until the top of the pot is dry to the touch. If it lives, it will not grow new leaves where the old ones were, it will just grow up from the existing top of the plant. Good luck!
