My Janet Craig Draecana is turning black!

I recently got this Janet Craig as a gift and I noticed one of the stems (the taller one) was black, it was only on the lowest part, about a couple of cm above the soil. But after 2-3 weeks it has spread upwards and into the leaves. The lower leaves are falling off. It doesn't seem to be affecting the other smaller one next to it. Also, I noticed today that there is what looks like a layer of mould covering the top of the soil, mainly surrounding the black stem. I have no idea what is happening to it. Wondering if anyone could shed some light on what could be going on with it? Thank you.
