What's Eating my Italian Pencil Pines?

I have 80 Italian Cypress Pencil Pines (Cupressus Sempervirens 'Glauca' Conifers) along the border of my suburban block in Adelaide. Other than the odd small branch that has died back, the 7-year old trees appear healthy. In recent years, about 12 of them have snapped in half during strong winds ... breaks my heart. Some critter has chewed it's way into the trunk where the trees have snapped, hence creating a weak-point. Can anyone tell me what this pest could be? How I can reduce more trees being eating alive?
