Ponds in the UK

Froggy would a-wooing go...

These two were on the grass some 12 feet from the pond, leisurely making their way along with an occasional big hop, with another pair following them. I've never seen frogs coupled out of the water before - is this unusual, or have I just never noticed it?

That's a great picture Bill. I have not seen them wooing outside the pond myself, but obviously they do hence your photo. At the moment there are a few 'couples' right on the bottom of my pond. They have been there for days now without moving far. Over the last few nights more frogs have been sitting in the shallows, but it has turned colder again so are now nowhere to be seen. All the fish have also gone back to the bottom, so roll on some better warmer weather.

The frogs obviously haven't read the frog coupling book :-) lovely picture. Must say if I had to choose, I'd go for the grass too! I've got a huge toad in my wild pond, he's so noisy.. presume he's trying to attract a lady toad. It's so good to see this tho' a reminder that spring is not too far away.

Yay for your potatoes! I've been enjoying them from the farmer's market, but my own would be more delicious. Savor them! I've always meant to plant them, but don't have enough room yet... I'm still working on Steve to give up more of his precious lawn... For a bona fide ex-hippie, he sure has a "1950's suburban" mentality when it comes to the lawn. Deep in his heart he believes that our home's value diminishes with each square foot of grass lost (sigh)... I had my first (cherry) tomato on the Summer Solstice. I actually had two ripe ones and invited my (gardening) neighbor to partake in the "Sacrament of First Holy Tomato" with me. They were warm, ripe, and perfectly "tomatoey." The rest of my vines are starting to set fruit... Do you think 15 tomato vines are too many for two people? :-O I picked my first ripe cucumber yesterday. I proudly showed it off to my four-year-old neighbor buddy, as I've been pointing out the progress since the plant first set flower. He was incredulous... he was pretty sure it wasn't a cucumber because it looked too much like a pickle!

Froggie Love Aftermath

I have the same sort of activity going on in my pond, but with toads. There are times that you can't even sit out back that their croaking gets so loud, it's almost ear-piercing....even my dogs refuse to go out back when they're in the "love" mode. It's more of a shrill than a croak and they just go back and forth. Then I look in the ponod and like in your picture, there are 2 or 3 toads on top of a female toad, almost drowning her. Some of the "pairs" are in the water, while others are just sitting on the rocks. Come the next morning, there are tons of frog eggs stuck in my plants. The koi love it! I have also seen tons of baby toads scampering everywhere -- they're so cute. I hate to walk by the pond though because they're everywhere and I'm afraid I'll crush them. This "activity" seems to take place every couple of weeks and I'm just wondering for how long. It does make the pond have a nasty smell for a couple of days, but I do water changes and it seems to take care of that. I love my frogs no matter how much noise they make -- it's froggy love............. Cindy Jax, FL

How sweet! I love sitting outside in the evening listening to the chorus. Had to laugh at my husband when I pointed out one particular frog sound and he said he thought all the noise was crickets or birds. Are you familiar with the Florida Wildlife Extension frog page? Good stuff. I went outside this morning to find a spawn of frog eggs in the pond. Curious if it is the tree frog or the southern leopard frog. We have a resident leopard frog and it's pretty cool. ~dianne Here is a link that might be useful: Frogs & Toads

Fantastic picture of a screech owl, Lellie! Just lovely! Poor little screechies get a bum rap...they don't screech at ALL! Lovely little trilling sound they make is quite nice, actually. Felix, I just may plant me some scuppernongs...I want to relive MY misspent youth, too! hehehe Oh, and the rain? It goes pit-ter pat-ter, PIT-ter pat-ter! La, la, laaaaaa. No rain today, though...listen to the rhythm of the scorching sun...frizzle frazzle, frizzle frazzle! (That's the sound of burning leaves and frying roses blossoms, in case you can't recognize it!) Sandy, as it happens I took that one with a Fuji Finepix, model A204.

To add a picture to the first post of a new thread in the gallery here, you just make your post in the usual way, and when you get to review your post you get the option of uploading a photo from your hard drive.

If you want to add a photo in another post, you need to put it somewhere on the web first, then add a link to it in your post.
