Help for newbie - Something's eating my pear leaves

Hi All,

We're very new to gardening and this is our first house we've owned and been able to actually grow things in. We have planted a number of apple and pear trees (dwarf root stock from the Diggers which we're intending to espalier along the fence line) a couple of months ago and the pears seem to be being eaten by something.

I've been out with a torch at night but can't see anything on the leaves and as it appears to start as a small brown dot I'm now wondering if it's bacterial and possibly shot hole?

I'd appreciate it if someone could have a look at the attached picture and advise?

If it was mine I'd suspect some sort of caterpillar, snail even if it was nearer the ground. What about the fruit, is that being eaten as well? Odd that you haven't been able to locate something on the tree, maybe the stems, even down to ground level. If there's nothing I'd suspect flying foxes at night. Any tell-tale droppings (faeces) near by?

I'm a bit late to answer, I know, but it might be interesting to note that snails and slugs love artichokes ! I have planted 12 artichokes, far apart one from the other, and they are fighting to survive against the snails and slugs. Ferramol the little buggers don't find it tasty enough. My ripe strawberries they don't give a rat's butt. Obviously the weeds they are fed up with. But the artichokes they are mad of them ! Gourmet meal ! Even the big hard leaves ! So I had to buy grounded coffee, kilos of it, and to make a ring around the artichokes. I sort of mulched around the plant and the circle is about 60 cm in diameter. I wish I had stock in starbuck because me alone have helped their business a lot ! Oh, there's hand picking as well, which I used to do at 6 in the morning, when only the artichokes were planted. Now I have to water the 50 tomatoes and 10 zucchinis and 5 squash (the lattest being a tasty meal for the snails too apparently ! ) so there's no time to pick the buggers before work any more ! Good luck ! Enjoy it that you're not here in the South of France where we have billions of little white snails called "limacon" ! They are so numerous that they stiffle whole big trees in summer when they stuck on them to avoid the hot soil !

can you get a pic of the damage? Here's something I am trying right now.. My dats were getting chewed to shreds, from god only knows what..even ate the buds. I threw some (what I thought at the time was pine) Red Cedar Shavings from, my DD's mouse habitat around the bases of the dats..nothing has touched them since. They have leaves now!! lol. So yesterday I went and did it around all my brugs..hoping it works on them too. We'll see. If you have any you may wanna just give it a try for now? I had tried so many things for slugs, nothing had worked before now except picking and smashing. Diatomaceous earth would work for slugs and snails, I just can't get any around here right now for some reason.

Thanks for the reply.

They're still very young so no fruit yet. We don't get flying foxes down here so that's probably a no-go. I'll have another look and see if I can find anything lurking on them
