My update: Finally warmed up enough to drag this out of the greenhouse and weed it out some. (Really hate that I can not keep up with the weeds to save my life!) There's six seeds that established themselves. The biggest one (third in row) formed at least 3 new bulbs around it. The last one at the right seems to somehow formed a new bulb at the very edge of the flowerbox? Bizarre. I hope to blast them with a lot of fertilizer over the summer and see if I can't get the biggest one to send up a bloom for Spring 2015....

Hope it's OK to throw in my brand new 2 cents, but Here goes: Goats are cool creatures but, left to their own devices, will kill everything in sight. Due to some of my friends' objections to Roundup over the years, I've done some research and could not find much bad about it, even on on the "black helicopter" pages. There has been extensive research since they have developed "Roundup-resistant" soy beans (scary, I know) so they can use roundup right over the soybeans for weed control. Even when directly ingested it seems to be no big deal. Supposedly, it it would take extremely humungous amounts to make even the smallest trace in our groundwater. The non-active ingredients in it were more worrisome (still not really) than the active chemicals. While I think that's all a bit much, if you have any kind of large property to manage, it's indespensible. It will kill both poison oak and blackberry with just a few applications at the right season. If you cut these by hand first, then apply it when it's going nuts in the spring, it works great. For fenclines and just plain preventing the extra handwork that takes a lot of labor, it works equally well. Even on trees stumps. For all that you're still using such a small quantity, I don't see how one could fault it. Souns like an ad, I'm sure, but I've lived on acreage for over 15 years, and I swear by it. Glad you folks enjoyed it. The coneflowers seem to be popular with others as well. So far, all have over-wintered here though we don't get severe weather like you folks do in the rest of the country. The hardest thing they had to endure was about thirty inches of rain from November to May. All of the coneflowers you see here are in their second or third year. The gigantic pink flowering mound in pic #7 was planted two years ago and now it is exploding. There are just a TON of flowers coming. This is another part of the coneflower difference here, these are the FIRST wave of flowers from my plants as Summer comes late here(and stays into October many years). The double-dark red/orange cone flowers are 'Hot Papaya'. I'll be glad to save you a seedhead Dax, and it will help if you remind me here or email me around October/November. Is this how they propogate? I'd love to have more. Ken, still a few projects left but the only major project is the grass which is gone probably in the Fall of 2012, replaced by rock paths, a sitting area and perhaps a water feature. I plan on having NO grass at all after 2013/2014. Ken, the conifer I think you're referring to in pic#22 is a Picea glehnii cultivar that Bob Fincham contributed to the garden.
