yellow and black lady bird

is the yellow and black ladybird a goodie or a baddie??

i've got a dozen or so on a zucchini and I don't know if they are causing the damage or they are eating what has caused the damage

The only one you have to worry about is the 26-28 spot ladybird they are orange/yellow and tend to feed on the upper surfaces of leaves the leaves may become brown amd papery, removal by hand is suggested

Do not confuse these pests with the common spotted ladybird which has only 18 spots and eat aphids and other small plant pests.... Cheers..MM.

I had the same problem! The 26-28 spotted ones are bad, it has taken us 3 seasons to finally get them under control! Thankfully we have many of the 'good' lady bugs in both yellow and red, which are attracted to the powdery mildew on leaves. If they are affecting your plants growth I would suggest culling them, or else do as I did move them to a friends garden who needed them.

Tally I'll bet you are right about the migration. Perhaps all the drought sent them down early. I've seen more different birds recently, have not seen a goldfinch but know that I am seeing tufted titmouse, wrens,and some finches that pop in and away pretty fast...as if they aren't accustomed to my well stocked feeders aka fast food for my friends. I'll keep an eye open for yellow. c

Absolutely Lesser Goldfinch. By the way, I don't know how much time you spent looking at warbler pics, but you would have saved yourself that effort by noting the bill shape: warblers have much thinner bills. Bill shape and size is often a good clue to point you in the right direction; bright colour patterns you'll likely remember without trying, but the bill really needs to be looked at (unless we're talking about a toucan or spoonbill etc). Ha! look at my screen name. Looking around the MBR: four reproduction Audubons in place of a headboard. One Japanese painting, bird on rice sheaf with roses. Two more Audubons on chest of drawers, along with life size fish crow carving. Dresser, one pottery sandpiper, one small Lizars sunbird print. Grandfather's enamelled Japanese box, sparrow and plum blossom, great aunt's Indian inlay box, bee-eaters - heirloom, not my fault. Okay, my fault, I chose them when it was my turn. That all works but I went overboard with the pillow...too contemporary, no self-discipline at all, I can't make myself get rid of it. Well, great-aunt's box doesn't quite fit either... DH has never complained, maybe because the color scheme is not too feminine, cream and rust and cafe au lait. Master bath, seven or eight more Lizars hummingbird prints on background of stencilled bamboo. I shall spare you the description of the other rooms in the house - no fabric, but antique prints and Japanese paintings, although there is the hummingbird wallpaper in the powder room and the hummingbird shower curtain in the children's bath. If you have to pee in my house, you get hummingbirds. My children sometimes do say, Mom, you have a lot of birds. Little do they know I'm waiting until they get through college and I can afford Koson prints. So fair warning, it is entirely possible to go too far. It's just that birds make me happy. I will tell you, it beats frogs. There was a while when people thought I collected frogs, because I had three small frogs and then my dear ones gave me frogs...

Here she is. She's about 2 feet tall and she has very large leafs that go all the way down to the bottom (unusual here in blackspot country). She has about 3 buds on her right now, but you cant really see them very clearly. Once she blooms I'll post pics of the flowers.

The yellow & black ladybird is definately a goodie, they are attracted to powdery mildew because they feed on it and it's only the yellow & black ones that do eat it, most other ladybirds are predatory, except the 26-28 spot ones, they attack plants in the cucurbitacea family, that is your zucchinis, cucumbers & pumpkins etc, If you are having a problem with powdery mildew, which is caused by a fungi, there are a number of things you can do to try and prevent it from spreading, don't crowd your plants, make sure they have good air circulation around them, always water them in the morning rather than evening, and try not to wet the leaves, give the plant/plants a regular seaweed extract spray ( leaves and all with this, a morning application) and I have read that a milk mix (1 part milk to 9 parts water) regularly sprayed on young plants will help prevent it, although I haven't tried this myself, but if your plants are mature and already badly infected it maybe too late for this, I do know that the powdery mildew does not affect the fruit but it does affect the plants growth often shortening zucchini's life, but hey, the weather is beautiful so get some more seeds in, zucchinis grow and produce so fast, what are you waiting for!!!!!!!!Kindest regards, Annette.
