Off the top of me head, thefof I've no idea, and to tell you the truth, if the Royal Bot. Gdns in Sydney cant id it it's very unlikely anyone of us can. I might suggest you post the pics to the 'Name that Plant' page of the (general) Garden Web site; my old mate Tedhort visits there fairly regularly and if can't key it out, I doubt anyone can. Let's know how you get on with it.
Mind you, on second thoughts, I've got a tree down the back looks a bit like it, I'll go check the label tomorrow and if it resembles it I'll let you know.

That was the first place I posted as some of the guys and girls there are quite mind boggling with their depth of knowledge, but no joy. I did notice that Tedhort didn't respond but he doesn't appear to be not one of the regular gurus.

I checked my plant out down the back thef. but the bloody birds again have pinched my label. There's new leaves on now, which, because they're new, are a shade paler than the old ones which are indeed the colour and shape of the ones in your pic. Unfortunately the thing is a long way off having a flower, the shade of which, though, is the same as in your picture.
I'll send Ted and email and ask if he'd take a look at your photo, I feel confident he'll be able to throw some light it.
Your dead right about the 'Name that Plant' people, though, most are Americans with an occasional Brit and mainland European thrown in. While they're pretty strong in all plant categories, their weak spot is Aussie natives, most don't have a lot of experience in them.

Hi Fof,

The closest I can get to this plant is perhaps the genera Canthium in the Rubiaceae family. Maybe a local variant or intergraded plant of the species C. odoratum (syn: Psydrax odorata).

A search of google images for Canthium (Psydrax) does bring up some similarities to your plant in some variants but there are still some noticeable differences. These could be explained due to local conditions etc ??. Do you recall if the flowers were scented?

As for the first plant, I suspect it might be Everistia vacciniifolia.

That nails the first one. With it's very distinctive foliage I knew someone would ID it.
As for the second, I now have a starting point. I am afraid I can't recall if it was scented, but I will be back to relocate it once we get into the flowering season.

Just a final thought on the second plant --- I did some checking on endemic plants in the general vicinity of the Cumberland and noted that Psydrax (in one form or another) may be present. Found this pic --close to Psydrax odorata ?.

I checked the name of the plant I have down the back that I thought resembled it a bit, it's a Backhousia. Looks a bit like that the second plant.
