Eucalyptus sp. Identification

Hello everyone!

These trees have been planted at KM Reedy Reserve in Hampton Park. As part of my school work i have been attempting to identify them.

After much research my best guess is E. camaldulensis. I base this on the bud, fruit and leaves, but the bark is very close, grey and box-like.

I am sure camaldulensis would be rougher or not persist so far up the trunk, even on such young specimens, although i do believe there is great provenance variation in these characteristics.

There are a few very large remnant E. camaldulensis within walking distance of these plantings. The area was classified as a riparian zone before the Hallam main drain was refined whenever the suburbs around here were established.

I think provenance is an important consideration. The camaldulensis up here looks very different (superficially) than it does down south. But you'd expect they'd source plants from some nearby locality rather than import just anything from anywhere. Have you tried the Euc. ID website? It's based in NSW but it might help.

That is a good website, it certainly helped me with some extra info.

But i still can't be sure. I'm hoping someone here will look at the photos i have taken and know for sure what it is, or if it definitely is not E. camaldulensis.

Hello, My husband and I bought a Silver Dollar Eucalyptus tree and planted it in our yard last July. It started growing immediately, and had been flourishing up until the past month. It probably grew about 2-3 feet from the time we planted it last year, but it has started losing its original leaves. It's still sprouting and growing the new spring leaves at the top, but it has lost almost all of the bottom leaves. Is this normal? I'm afraid that we're doing something wrong, and I really don't want to lose this tree...it's absolutely beautiful. Any advice? Thanks in advance!

FWIW, none of the frost hardy eucalyptus species (which would also be the ones most likely to require some kind of cold stratification) have yellow flowers so most likely the seed needs no cool period for germination. just guessing but the comparatively large size of the plant MIGHT indicate e. stricklandii one of the larger of the yellow-flowered species.

Well, I think the flower is too big for laxa. Scorpioides is usually in a wet place. I lean towards sylvatica.

After analysing the seeds i'm 95% sure the pictured specimens are E. camaldulensis.

The seeds are yellow and cuboid. So many features fit the description, i'm gonna call it.
