Ants in ya pants

Well actually in the lawn! We have a few hundred little ant heaps that keep appearing on our lawn. I've been told that they are green ants. Any ideas on how to overcome the problem. I've been following the toad page and popping the ants in the freezer, bashing them over the head or using carbon monoxide would be a little tedious! apart from tnt any suggestions would be appreciated. If you live in the UK then your green ants are not the same as our green ants. Since you have so many you probably have to use some sort of chemical. It will most likely have to be repeated until the numbers are knocked right back.
Ask at your local garden center.

Hi Lilly,
I actually now live in QLD sunshine coast. This is not a problem I would have encountered certainly not on the scale I have here. I was wanting some more local answers possibly. I had heard that it was a problem that some of the pineapple growers have experienced and they were using a new chemical treatment. I've asked around but so far no further info is forthcoming. If anyone knows anything with this regard I'd really appreciate their input. Many thanks cheers Jan

Fire Ants, as I understand, are simply bad, and since they are non native people where they are need to control them. The single best place I have found to learn about them is Texas A & M since most every other source of information I have seen uses the information developed by the researchers at TAMU. The other ants clean up our environment, working on the bits and pieces of "waste" material we through down, cleaning up the dead bodies of other insects, etc. Ants are not known to be major pollinators. Welcome, Betty in Georgia!!! I think I've seen you somewhere before *g*. I am so happy to have been a part of your conversion, and you are going to love it here (especially the OT threads, those are my favorites...we like to get friendly). OK, look up at the top of this page, there is a green bar that says Blogs, Forums, Photo Galleries, etc. Hover your mouse over "Forums" and you will see "Garden Forums" as one of the choices. 1. Turn garments inside out before washing. This reduces wash wear on the outer surface. 2. Use a detergent without optical brighters (Cheer, Cheer for Darks, etc.) Some of us go a step further and use Black Magic (Perwool), an expensive imported detergent sold at Miele appliance dealers -- it smells a bit like hair dye but apparently it helps set the dark dye. Your basic Tide, All, etc. generally have optical brighteners that can make black clothing look faded because they reflect light. Avoid washing black clothing in them -- those brighteners apparently don't wash out. 3. AIR dry your clothes -- just hang them up and let them dry. I'm convinced that some fading is due to tumbling in hot dryers. I keep my black Levis pretty dark by following these steps. But like rpsinfoman says, some garments will bleed and fade regardless of what one does. Finally, if I was really worried about fading a pair of designer pants, I'd hand them over to my dry cleaner. Pricey, yes, but cheaper than a new pair of expensive pants.

Hey Bumble, just wanted to tell you that you were right about the pricing on the sweaters above. Quality wise I would say the regular price should have been between $60 and $85 (about what I paid). The sale price should have been less. No way are the sweaters in a quality range of $164 regular retail as stated. Saying that though they fit short wasted me perfectly and have a casual sliming elegance about them. They also flow nicely and are made well. The fabric is very light though, really too light to call it a sweater. If I did not live in Florida I would be disappointed but would say they are perfect for mildly cool evening here. In short, I do not feel I got ripped off but I did not score the deal of the century. I would give the sweaters 4 1/2 stars out of five because they fit my needs. The gray FDJ jeans were a big hit and are the most comfortable best fitting jeans I have every owned in my life. The "find your fit" check list on the FDJ sites was perfect for picking the right jeans for body shape. My husband was oozing with complements over the gray jean gray sweater getup. I'm seriously thinking of springing for the FDJ dark wash jeans at the high regular price...even though I have never been much of a jean person I love the comfort and fit of these. At 52 I think the splurge is worth feeling sexy in jeans.

We get ants in our lawn, I just sprinkle ant dust on them, can be brought anywhere. Have to do it a few times though to get rid of them. That is for green or black ones.

I was told when the ants come so does the rain or is that just for the ordinary ants.

There bite is very painful, have had a few myself but now seem clear of the green ones.

In paving, I just use boiling water but that doesn't dothe lawn much good. I've found Hortico's Ant & Roach Dust successful on yard nests, where they are a nuisance. That is if you don;t mind using chemicals

Keep away from the ant rid products containing chlorpyrifos, especially if you're going to using it on lawns where kids will be playing. This chemical is banned for home use in the US. I thought it was going to be here too, but it's still on the shelves.
