Silly me, expecting something a bit different in a segment on poinciana from CC on Gardening Australia last week. Presumably, Colin hasn't come across the yellow flowered variety and that he also hasn't seen the astonishing displays of colour in cQ and nQ after a dry winter, with very few leaves on the trees. He mentioned the pods, though....does anyone else like them??

Anyway, here's a pic of a very frustrated poinciana root seen in New Farm, Brisbane.

Hi Rose,

Tough trees, no question - didnt catch the segment, but I assume that Colin has some issues with Delonix Regia ? Cant say I entirely blame him - a beautiful tree, but we've planted too many of them in Qld for mine. Not sure why so many backyards seem to contain only one tree - a Mango or a Poinciana (mine has both ..), but its almost as though it was part of the building covenant in the 60's and 70's.

I'll post a photo of mine in flower in December : its one of the biggest that I've seen outside of parklands but I'm sure they grow even larger in FNQ.

I'll elaborate about the pods. Colin thought they were interesting, or attractive,or some such. I inherited my mother's biases there though I couldn't be bothered *hating* them. Sometimes, to keep her happy, I have at them with a pole trimmer, until the neck gives out. The general tone of the segment was positive. The man has a large output and who could blame him for revisiting an oldie for a rest.

I've still got a bit of a thrill on a yellow one day but otherwise will let other people put up with the roots and the borers. Hoping to see the flame tree (Brachychiton) I liberated after several years in a pot onto our (sloping) nature strip flower before we leave here. It has settled in well. I remember Grant from FNQ writing here about the extreme colour displays from poinciana in dry times and saw brilliant examples, including the red one, in Charters Towers in Nov '03.

Hi Arthur, Your photos are beautiful! As a real novice, I can only appreciate the beauty of the flowers, and not their rarity. And, because I always go for bright, solid colours, my favourite is the lycaste, with the violacea a close second. Ah! the Botannical Gardens! Childhood memories flood in. One of my very first is of my third birthday party, celebrated as a family picnic on the lawns near the water. It was 1940 (Yes, yes, I'm that ancient). Another time I fell into the duckpond - fortunately only a few inches deep. Last time my husband and I were in Sydney, we revisted the Gardens. Lots of memorabilia remain - the Nude Boxers and the Four Seasons to mention a few. But what are they doing about the fruit bats? THAT is something new and not very pleasant! Are the orchids on permanent display, or a seasonal thing? I'll time our next visit to coincide, if possible. Judy

Am quite getting to like Daintree pines - Gymnostoma australianum as they have not only the conical shape, but also a nice flush of red "flowers" followed by interesting seed pods. I think you should not be put off by "eventual" sizes of pines as, growing in pots rather than in-ground, you can control that a lot . You might contact the curators/staff of Mt Cootha Gardens, Roma St, and Friends of the Gold Coast gardens, any of whom might give you input on the area. As for sources, bearing in mind that some multi-national companies DO stock plants not entirely suited to their neighbourhoods, go browse around Bunnings (ALL Gold Coast stores), Masters, and the few remaining independants like Boyds at the Tweed, Ashmore Garden World, Ross Evans, and not forgetting the permanent market folk at Carrara - if I've forgotten anyone, apologies. With a bit of research if you don't like what's available, go check e-bay and gum-tree
