Tulipwood (Harpullia Pendula)

Hi!

I am on a small block (in Brisbane) with the house setback just 5 m from the front property boundary, and thought it would be nice to have a small, but shade-providing tree in the front garden.

I have a Harpullia Pendula in the townhouse complex I'm renting in, and it is mature (about 10m tall), but has quite a narrow trunk, and I thought it might be harmless enough to plant, say 4m, from the foundations.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this, or whether a root barrier would be required, or whether I should drop the entire idea.

Thought I might answer this to move it down the page.

Harpulia pendula is a very attractive tree. I have a couple growing down here on the Central Coast of NSW. It is hard to say just how dangerous it might be. It can depend on the nature of your foundations and the kind of soil you have. I would think that four metres away from the house is fine as long as the foundations are reasonably solid. It will be quite a long time before the Harpulia might become a problem.

Qld Forestry has a pamphlet on the relative danger of roots of different species. Memory tells me that Harpullia isn't on it, but you might like to check. Even a phone call to forestry might answer your question for you.
I think Harpullia species would be good for your site. So, I imagine, would any other species that has been planted in the last 20 or 30 years as a footpath tree in Brisbane.

I know in bonsai, to create a new leader you take the strongest shoot (from those resulting from the break in the leader) and wire it upward and prune off all other nearby shoots so that all the energy goes into that one shoot. I'm sure the same principle would work with a normal size tree accept you might straighten it out by strapping a plant stake to it like a splint instead of using wire. Just position the shoot so that it goes in the same direction as the old leader and secure it with the stake and ties. Of course, make sure you don't break that one in the process. Then after the shoot has hardened you can take off the stake. It should work, but I'm basing this on my knowledge of bosai and I don't know anything about Tulipwood. Hope this helps : )

Thanks, Ed, for those suggestions. The minimum night temp in the middle of winter can be as low as 0 (degrees C), but is usually 5-10. The ave day temp in winter is probably 14-16. In the conservatory, I should expect maybe 5-8 degrees higher than outside temperature, as it faces north although on a grey day that might be less. I see you're from Brisbane. I've been in touch with a nursery in Logan (Logan trees I think) who can freight me some advanced trees for the purpose of giving me a head start, in terms of establishing a rainforest appearance, but I'm looking for a supplier in Melbourne region for some understorey/ ground level specimens as well. The tree I'm considering is Harpullia Pendula. Any other ideas out there? The website looks fantastic - I'll explore in detail in the days ahead (it is quite extensive)

Does anyone know why my Harpullia pendula leaves might have yellow blotches on them? Looks like they're lacking in something - but what? Any ideas? I have several of these trees and it's only a couple which have this problem.

Harpullia pendula! I certainly would not recommend as a hedge, I have one and it's at least 7 to 8 metres tall and similarly wide. For a native hedge, I use various hybrid syzygium but only those less prone to attack, especially by psycillids.
