aphids on yuccas

Hi,

I have aphids on small yucca plants, any help would be appreciated. Has anyone used white oil on yuccas.

I have used all the Metho tratments and so forth and have now given up on them.
I use David Grey's Systemic granules on the soil and that gets the little devils when they eat the plant, stops them at the roots as well.

I have the most discusting home remedy for aphids on all plants but it really does work every time. If you know someone who smokes cigarettes, ask them to collect all the buts and put them into a 150gm container with a lid (eg coffee jar). Once it is full, empty it into an old 2lt ice-cream container or any other container you wouldnt mind throwing out. Fill the container with water and a little squirt of dishwashing liquid. Let this sit for a half hour or so. Strain the liquid out through a piece of cloth into a spray bottle. The nicotine in the "cigarette soup" is poisonous. Keep it away from children, pets etc and make sure you wear gloves when mixing. The nicotine is poisonous to aphids and any other sap sucking pests. It also gets absorbed into the plant and so continues working for quite some time after. Nicotine has been used for centuries in the control of pests, and hasnt damaged my plants in any way. Please do not take up smoking yourself just to kill the aphids.

Yeh I have probably over 100 potted plants this year. Im still not sure if I will let the big yuccas die, but if I do sometimes I take off the heads and root them. They root really easily. The yuccas came from Home Depot and the tall one was 30 dollars and the small one 20 something so they werent too expensive for their size. I wish I could take all my plants in, but I only have room for the more expensive ones, or the harder to find ones. The good thing about cannas and elephant ears though is they dont take up any room when you store the bulbs.

looking for a systemic insecticide

green, this is a universal challenge for those who summer their plants outside. Unfortunately, our tropical foliage plants are quite attractive to mites, scale insects, mealybugs, aphids, and whitefly! No matter how healthy they are, by the way. There are very few systemic pesticides that are labeled for use on indoor container plants. The reason for this is consumer safety. The peat based potting mix that most of us use absorbs these pesticides, creating problems for the indoor environment. Mind you, there ARE some of these pesticides available, but I'd still suggest that you avoid them. Better to go with something like Neem oil and fish emulsion ( used as a spray). Yep, neither of them smell terrific, but at least they are not toxic! ;-) Most houseplants, too, can tolerate a spray of one part rubbing alcohol to three parts water very well. Do a foliage test if you have doubts. I've used it for many years on nearly all of my plants (no fuzzy leaves, though). Before you bring your plants in, you might consider putting them in a basin or tub and filling it up with water. This will chase up any critters that may have taken up residence in the potting medium.

meszaros_jon That is not my tree. I don't even have a house that would support it. It is a tree that just passed from never bloomed to having great fruit. My trees and seed were gifts from 2 friends both Cory an pip. They are active in the garden web New Zealand lemonade tree grafted to Poncirus Trifoliata hybrid rootstock, New Zealand lemonade tree grafted to US897 rootstock. grafted at home 2 months ago. she's in a foil lined bucket with a 23 watt daylight CFL brooder lamp above. Meiwa kumquat on Kuharske Citrange rootstock. top and bottom of Meiwa Fukushu kumqusat tree #1 from seed was planted in ground about a week ago. Fukushu kumqusat tree #2 from seed was planted in ground about 3 hours ago. Both Fukushu trees are protected by a cubic yard triple glazed glass cold frame.
