Great to see on this forum again. PP arrived home yesterday I think but I haven't been in touch yet. Thought I'd let the jet lag lessen first.

CPM is a big, beautiful shrub in her third year here in sunny, hot, and dry California. She's very content with deep watering once every week and a half or so, and being heavily mulched with horse poop and pine needles. Goooorgeous, smelly flowers!!!!!

If you're going to proceed without a good soil test (and sadly, the home kits don't really count), you should do your homework. I understand your desire to save some money! What do your neighbors say that their soil always needs? What is the conventional wisdom in your area? Where I live, for instance, the soil tends to be generally pretty good, but somewhat on the acidic side. Conventional wisdom (and my grandmother, and all of the other gardeners in the area) say that adding lime will be necessary where I live. In fact, when I don't do this, I get Blossom End Rot (a sign of calcium deficiency) on my tomatoes and peppers, and when I add some lime, it goes away. Does the conventional wisdom of your area say that the soil is always alkaline, and you'll need to lower the pH? If so, products to help you to do this will be available in your area, certainly at a garden store, and quite likely at the "big box" stores like Home Depot (though I might have a bit of trouble finding that stuff where I live, since we have the opposite problem here). If pH-lowering supplies aren't readily available in the local garden stores, I'd have additional doubts about what your home soil test told you. Adding organic matter is always a good step, even without a soil test. As people have said, lots of good organic matter will bring your soil back towards neutral, regardless of where is started, and it will also add lots of the nutrients your plants need to be happy and healthy. I believe it is possible to garden (and even to garden well) without a soil test, but you need to keep on your toes. People gardened for a good long time without access to soil tests, but the other side of that is that the successful folks knew how to read their soil and their plants to detect deficiencies.

Melinda thank you for the wonderful things you sent.I needed peat pellets so they were very much appreciated along with the Lily Bulbs.I planted them thisafternoon.The foliage plant arrived in perfect condition.All I need to do was plop it in a pot and it looks like I just bought it at a store!!Love It!!.I also loved the kitchen towel.It is soo spring looking with the pretty flowers on it.That Lady Bug Shelf Sitter really makes me smile.That is *pardon the pun* Cute As A Bug!!Also a big thank you for the suet cake.My woodpeckers have been going thru them like mad lately. Ray, I still have seeds for those Aussie tomatoes earmarked for you. There won't be as many varieties as I would have liked as the PGRC stuff arrived too late for this year. Still, I managed to plant 10 each of GL :>), Scoresby Dwarf, Simpson Summer Palace and Bush Whopper (PGRC via a fellow grower locally)...seems to me I missing something. Anyhoo, 250+ varieties of tomatoes plus other veg.

Grub, I don't share my list or trade anymore, but will send seeds to friends as requested. PP stayed with me and took inventory so she's already earmarked much of the stuff she wants and, being the organized data-gatherer she is, most probably will remember what I'm growing; Ray sent me Fritsche so generously and promptly, collects Australian tomatoes like I collect Canucks so I am happy to forward anything he would like; Peter collects Greek stuff as do I so I'll be sending him seeds; you make me laugh reading your posts, and that's enough to make me want to share. Plus any friend of PP's is a friend of mine.

Hi folks! I'm back, but not adjusted :P I'm missing the northern hemisphere long twilights! My garden is almost non-existent here - there are just a few peppers dangling on leafless stems... *sob*

Found some Suttons 'Tumbling Tom' (Red and Yellow) seeds, but no Balcony Red or Yellow that you wanted me to look out for Jennifer.

Will post here again soon - hoping to get seeds sent out to people next week for those who sent me SASEs.
