Are you home and planting yet, PP?

Happy Birthday!!!!!!

Ray, Grub, Peter et al, please let Patrina know what you'd like from me in terms of seeds for this season. Will send some accordingly.

Here's to a great garden year down under!

Jennifer, still melting in the True North (no, PP, it hasn't cooled down or become less humid yet...)

Hi Jennifer,
Great to see on this forum again. PP arrived home yesterday I think but I haven't been in touch yet. Thought I'd let the jet lag lessen first.

Howdy back,
Where would I find your list? I'm a bit out of touch, but I'm sure you can tell me what's hot Up Over this year? I do know I would like to try Neves Azorean Red (spelling?). I will be in touch soon. Glad to hear PP is home safely.
Ciao for now :)grub

how to lower pH in my garden soil?

If you're going to proceed without a good soil test (and sadly, the home kits don't really count), you should do your homework. I understand your desire to save some money! What do your neighbors say that their soil always needs? What is the conventional wisdom in your area? Where I live, for instance, the soil tends to be generally pretty good, but somewhat on the acidic side. Conventional wisdom (and my grandmother, and all of the other gardeners in the area) say that adding lime will be necessary where I live. In fact, when I don't do this, I get Blossom End Rot (a sign of calcium deficiency) on my tomatoes and peppers, and when I add some lime, it goes away. Does the conventional wisdom of your area say that the soil is always alkaline, and you'll need to lower the pH? If so, products to help you to do this will be available in your area, certainly at a garden store, and quite likely at the "big box" stores like Home Depot (though I might have a bit of trouble finding that stuff where I live, since we have the opposite problem here). If pH-lowering supplies aren't readily available in the local garden stores, I'd have additional doubts about what your home soil test told you. Adding organic matter is always a good step, even without a soil test. As people have said, lots of good organic matter will bring your soil back towards neutral, regardless of where is started, and it will also add lots of the nutrients your plants need to be happy and healthy. I believe it is possible to garden (and even to garden well) without a soil test, but you need to keep on your toes. People gardened for a good long time without access to soil tests, but the other side of that is that the successful folks knew how to read their soil and their plants to detect deficiencies.

What a delightful idea! That space is already so clear and open a lot of things are possible. Though a questions first.. What are the trees? Do they shed a lot of have sticky sap? And why is that area so clear and open- is it because nothing grows there or because it just got an excellent clean up job? I'll offer a couple suggestions past astro/outdoor turf. If the area is right for it, consider making a carpet of moss. Or perhaps utilize a fine grade playground mulch- using an edger to help keep the mulch inside the garden. Stepping stones or other pavers to set up paths or spaces for setting up chairs. Solar lights in the trees and around the paths and into littler spaces. Think of what would make that space a fairy enchanting for adult size if those trees were wander-underable by a person say.. 5'6" to 6' tall.. and then miniaturize it for your princess only up to growing height of say 3 foot tall or so? So include the walkways, lights, and sights, just on your little girls scale. Even as she gets older.. On the left of the photo is a nice wide enough to have a walkway, the center a bit more of a build in with fairy gardens perhaps front with the birdbath, and the right another walkway opening. Dress up that back wall nice so even when she isn't a little fairy princess anymore she can still enjoy the refuge, perhaps replacing small chairs with a bench or something later on.

Ray, I still have seeds for those Aussie tomatoes earmarked for you. There won't be as many varieties as I would have liked as the PGRC stuff arrived too late for this year. Still, I managed to plant 10 each of GL :>), Scoresby Dwarf, Simpson Summer Palace and Bush Whopper (PGRC via a fellow grower locally)...seems to me I missing something. Anyhoo, 250+ varieties of tomatoes plus other veg.

Grub, I don't share my list or trade anymore, but will send seeds to friends as requested. PP stayed with me and took inventory so she's already earmarked much of the stuff she wants and, being the organized data-gatherer she is, most probably will remember what I'm growing; Ray sent me Fritsche so generously and promptly, collects Australian tomatoes like I collect Canucks so I am happy to forward anything he would like; Peter collects Greek stuff as do I so I'll be sending him seeds; you make me laugh reading your posts, and that's enough to make me want to share. Plus any friend of PP's is a friend of mine.

Horrid grammar above. How embarrassing.

Grub, I'm growing Neves AR and will send seeds accordingly.

Hi folks! I'm back, but not adjusted :P I'm missing the northern hemisphere long twilights! My garden is almost non-existent here - there are just a few peppers dangling on leafless stems... *sob*

Found some Suttons 'Tumbling Tom' (Red and Yellow) seeds, but no Balcony Red or Yellow that you wanted me to look out for Jennifer.

Will post here again soon - hoping to get seeds sent out to people next week for those who sent me SASEs.

It's okay. I had a look at my seeds last night and I have way too many. Clearly, my eyes are bigger than my patch. Thanks and best wished to y'all. :)grub
