FYI: Lantana survey

A survey on lantana camara is currently being distributed to landholders via, I understand, land protection officers, landcare groups and visitors to the nrm website etc. Requested information includes flower samples in plastic bags for colour ID of biotypes; I queried this and am still dubious; with the best intentions, delays in transit occur. Anyway, will be interested to see the resulting information on best practice control and distribution.

Hi Rose, shall check it out,I have couple of hectares of the stuff to get rid of,anything may help. If they can recognise there is a problem, maybe they will do something.??? Peter r

Hey, peter, I was thinking of renaming myself Roundup, as in Roundup on replies. Thanks for adding the link, how lazy was I. Pleased to see that segment on and in GA on the Sydney (?) gardener who reclaimed her lantanaised bottom garden "sensitively". The biocontrol agent (haven't found out which one yet) is knocking the L.camara around nicely in cQ including a locally well-known commercial planting (giggle). Unfortunately the L. montevidensis, which is spreading on a face, is very healthy. Rose.

That's sad. In my opinion, invasive species are the biggest threat to our natural resources right now. We are dealing with them everywhere. Even though I make my living studying them, I still find it sad. Hemlock woolly adelgid, emerald ash borer, ALB, SOD, laurel wilt, gold spotted oak borer, 1000 cankers disease of black walnut, beech bark disease, Dutch elm disease, WPBR, Sirex wood wasp - it is a broken record. The saddest part is that much of this is preventable.

I have been away for such a long time -- it's not the company. I have been a care-giver for a friend I used to date, who just died of cancer. Which reminds me: Asolo, how is your Mother? Gladys: Yes, I have been interested in the Master Gardener courses. I actually did that when I lived in Atlanta, but want to do it again because I've moved to the West and gardening is very different out here. I had the good fortune to discover a community garden, and I'm very active in it and serve on the board. I love it! coolvt: I have dated a few fellas who had no apparent money constraints -- some I met through my profession and a couple of others through a singles group at church. But two of the best guys I've dated were very mainstream economically. I discovered a long time ago that the old saying "Money can't buy happiness" is very, very true. I would rather go to McDonald's with someone I really enjoy being with, then the fanciest place in the country with someone who's boring or otherwise just not for me. I hope you're meeting better prospects than the one you described. Sounds like "good riddance."

Minnie_tx is a good example of how wardialers work. They dial every number combination and texting is like emailing spam. Even more efficient than a wardialer. And they don't have to have you on their telescammer list to do it. Also keep in mind if you call a toll-free number, they have your number and as mentioned, you've established a business relationship authorizing them to call you. And don't be fooled into thinking you'll "block" your number to a toll free line. Can't be done in the normal methods. There are a few ways around it but for the most part they have your number. Once again, if you get it in an email, it's probably a hoax! And it accomplishes what many of the spammers want. Tie up bandwidth, make people do unnecessary and stupid things and waste peoples time. Please learn about hoaxes. And educate the people who send you these hoaxes. They're not your friends when they do that. I do not need another caution about the $250 cookie recipe - I'm busy enough with the Nigerian General who's going to make me rich!

Hi Rose, yes that was just great garden, I have a work for the dole group at my work, and we attacked some on Wednesday, these guys were not to fussed about hard yaka, but once started they could see the difference that they had made and we actually found some young natives amongst it, A Renovation Rescue the guys were really pleased that they had saved some native plants for the Land for Wildlife and went home having achieved something from a peice of nothing wasteland.I hope they come back next week and keep on going. I am eagerly awaiting the StMarys guys to show up next month 40 year 10 guys and let them loose in it for 2 days.Fingers Crossed. Peter r

In NQ early to mid autumn was the best time to spray Lantana and again a window opened in early spring.

The spray was the cheapest form, sodium 24D but the potassium salt tested by the Alan Fletcher Lab in the 1970s was superior. Added wetting agent was essential. Glyphosate is the way now.

Spraying during summer was ineffective. Seasonal timing like most weed control, was all important. Then burning and spot spraying regrowth finished it off.

It is starting to be a bit cool in SEQ by mid May but I have not tested here.

I know what a pest Lantana is. But I do have some of the lovely yellow, white and mauve ones in my garden mainly because I need tough stuff to survive where I live. Recently in a wharehouse that sells plants here in Cairns I saw some lantana for sale, that had red flowers with the circle of yellow inside. It looked so much like the pest that I just couldn't bring myself to buy it. Someone please tell me that these particular ones were not that terrible pest!

It's been shown that the pollen from even the so-called sterile cultivars of lantana can fertilise the wild lantana creating offspring that can be harder to control and even more toxic with some crosses....afraid I lump all L. camara and L. montevidensis into the pest category.

New weed legislation introduced into Qld commences 1st November and will prohibit the sale of all lantana even the hybrids. Also on the hit list for this state will be african tulip trees (Spathodea) tecoma stans and singapore daisy
