No the impressive Canna 'Durban" = 'Tropicanna' doesn't throw lower red spires! That's a compact Lobelia 'Starship Red' which has nice contrasting rich green leaves. This Cardinal Flower was easy to grow from seed* (as are Canna) and gets the hummingbirds darting all around to enhance the tropical theme. I like L. 'Vulcan Red' as well to for contrast. Dark maroon leaved and also more compact than L. 'Queen Victoria' with no staking needed. * After using many over the years, the best seed starting method that I've used over the years is a biodome and sponge block system or similar. Works best with heatmats and bright plant light. hey shady ... welcome to GW ... there are a series of posts.. by FFB.. firefighterboy.. about online retailers ... try his name and something or another in the GW search box ... i suggest you find a local arborteum.. and visit.. to see what will grow in your area ... the further south you go.. the less likely the abies ???.. whats the middle latin name??? ... the less likely they will thrive .. hence a local visit to a tagged collection ... the hunt.. is part of the fun.. but let me tell you.. they are always coming out with new names.. and sometimes its hard to find the old names .... so try to find 'the look' .. but dont get caught on specific names ... link to intro to conifers ... as trees.. they never really stop growing.. size estimates are at 10 years .... its all about annual growth rate.. and how fast they make it to the listed mature size.. and how fast they go right past .... predict double the size in 20 years ... but let me make it very clear.. us hardcore.. would rather you buy something that will thrill you for 10 or 15 years.. and then get rid of it.. instead of buying something that 'fits' .... good luck ken Here is a link that might be useful: intro

Thanks Ken! Yes I know the definition of dwarf vs miniature, intermediate, and large. Besides the Taxus and the Abies lasiocarpa they are all considered dwarf if I remember right. We just wanted something slow growing so it won't outgrow the space. Hm, is it just that variety of Taxus or do none of the Yews do well in your area? The ladies in my garden club seemed to think that would be the one that would be taking off the fastest. I can't believe how big your Vintage Gold is! The tag said in 10 years it would be 3' x 3'. I know depending on the conditions that can vary a lot but 7' is huge. Is yours in the shade? We would not have the space for that. One of the flower beds is 25' long and 6' wide. That is where I wanted to have the 'Frostie', 'Hussi', 'Starker's Dwarf', and 'Vintage Gold'. The other 25' long flower bed is curved with the conifers being on each of the wider ends. The end where I was planning on putting 'Jeddeloh' and 'White Pygmy' staggered is 7' wide. And the other end is 8 or 9' wide where I was hoping to put 'Glauca Compacta and ÂNana Aurescens also staggered so they could each get that wide. We wanted some height on that end since you see down the full 25' length as you approach the house. Does that sound like a big enough space? I forgot to mention that the area is very sheltered from the wind also. Is it true that you aren't supposed to amend the soil when you plant conifers? Our soil isn't bad but has a little too much clay. What about fertilizer or root growth products? I've never used them but I've also never planted such costly plants!
