Ive decided to share my gardens with you in list form.

Some people love lists! Mine is more for inventory in case my plant tags get lost!

It might give you some ideas of plants to try.

If the plant was successfully started by seed, or cutting you will see that listed.

Tropicals are labeled with how I store them over the winter.

Climate here-

In zone 5 here in NW IL we have 4 or 5 months summer between frosts

We have 40 inches of rain/yr

Winters get down to -20. but the freezing and thawing is probably harder on plants.

The soil is NOT well drained.

The wind is always blowing.

My soil is amended with compost and manure and some areas get additional watering.

Wow. That is a great list! I am in the same zone, but in North Central Indiana. I get lake effect snow off of Lake Michigan, but for the most part it's the same. Someday I will be more organized...It's that 4 letter word "work" that gets in the way!

Karen-Awesome job! I have seen your plant tags and you have gone to great trouble to get just the right ones, I hope they don't get lost!
Your gardens are beautiful and you truly have the gardening spirit, you share your plants and your knowledge!
(the Castor bean plants were stunning, by the way!)

Wow, I'd forgotten about this thread and a LOT has changed for my ratings in the last four years. Vaporvac - sorry it took a while to get back to you about your question. Disneyland lasted about 3 years for me grafted from J&P then died, so I replaced it own root about 2 years ago. It didn't come back last winter but that's one that i still pine after and will probably replace whenever I can. There's something about the solid "pow" of color that makes my heart sing, and to top it off my son wrote the name tag for that rose when he was about 9 so it has a sentimental value that way too. Moses, glad this is helpful, but to be really helpful I need to update the listing above quite a bit. For starters, very few Harkness roses are hardy for me in zone 5, with the exception of Samaritan and Volunteer in a normal zone 5 spot and Savoy Hotel and Well Being which are grafted and in my zone 6 pocket. A few of the climbers by Harkness are also hardy - Perpetually Yours and The Prince's Trust are several years old and Ginger Syllabub has survived my zone 4 pocket - but they almost never bloom. Olive is a better bloomer (a few blooms a year) but it's no more than 4' tall after about 4 years. I still do have some Harkness survivors in my yard that surprised me when I did a search - Apricot Abundance and Honor Elizabeth, International Herald Tribune are just barely hanging in there and Easy Does It and Livin' Easy have lasted sporadically but usually die off after a year or two. Armada, Bridge of Sighs, Carris, and Pride of England have only lasted one winter and that's not enough to consider them hardy yet. I've started to nix roses bred by Harkness on principle as marginally hardy in the way that Viragharavian roses simply aren't bred for my climate. It sounds like I have a lot of Harkness roses but given how many he bred and how many roses I have, it's not that many (compare that to 50+ thriving roses each for Kordes, Lim and Austin and you get the picture). OK, so here's my updated list from above with notes on whether I'd still rate them in the same group or not. Floribunda Roses hardier than expected in zone 5 (those w/ an asterisk are in a zone 4 pocket) 1 - cane hardy (w/hybridizer) Black Cherry - Zary (probably a 2 - not cane hardy but reliable after winters) Black Ice - Here is a garden under an ash tree in OH in it's even though the garden was just over a year old at the time, from previously being sparse grass. There are hostas, columbine, creeping phlox, Pulmonaria, Bergenia, Trillium, violets, Polemonium (jacob's ladder,) a few bulbs, Lamium, a little lilac, ready to be a tree if the ash got emerald beetle borers (I moved, remains a mystery,) and a few others I don't remember and can't see from this angle. 4" of mulch can retain moisture for weeks. Of your list, I would avoid the Vinca. Just too sprawling/spready to play nice with the other plants. In general, you don't want vines in a flower bed. Entities like Vinca or Ajuga that rapidly spread really do best in their own, well-enclosed space. Spreading through other more self-contained plants, these spreaders can make the whole thing look like a confused mess. But, like most things-gardening, this is subject to your personal opinion on the matter.

Hellebore - Do you grow them in your zone5/6 garden?

I recently posted this picture in the Shade combo thread. I think the foliage of these hellebores looks good even without bloom. The foliage also holds well from spring to late fall - this area still looks just as fresh as the picture right now in late October. The Corsican Hellebore is iffy in my zone but does well in this sheltered location against the house wall. The leaves in the upper left are from a burning bush. Upper right and bottom right, fine deep green foliage is H. foetidus (Stinking Hellebore), it has upright limey yellow green colored blooms, like a stalk sticking straight up. Middle is H. argutifolia (Corsican Hellebore). It has serrated shiny green foliage with a somewhat yellow caste to it compared to the others and small lime green flowers above the foliage that show well. It grows much larger and taller than the other two. H. orientalis (Lenten Rose) has dark matte green foliage and flowers like the others in very early spring here after the foliage has taken a pretty bad beating from our winter. As a result the flowers are more prominent that you might think. I also cut out some of the bad looking foliage to show off the flowers. I've been growing Lambert Closse for several years now. It is a nice, bushy shrub--doesn't get bs and retains all its leaves--really nice and full. It blooms a lot, but does have short periods of rest although there are usually at least a couple blooms even then. Blooms are pretty shades of medium pink in the center to light pink/whitish on the outer petals. Its major limitation is that it doesn't hold its bloom shape very well--kind of a muddled look (I think they call it)--but not unattractive. In other words, you wouldn't stop to admire a solitary bloom, but the whole bush covered with blooms is good-looking. I might be inclined to plant it away from a path--where the whole shrub can be viewed at more of a distance. Don't know how cold hardy it is up north, but it was one of the few roses in my garden that survived the great Easter Freeze this year mostly unscathed. Let's see--what else? Mine is about 3x3, but a couple newer canes are taller so I'm guessing by next year it will be closer to 4x3. Don't remember if it has fragrance. Kate

Want to expand your z5 semitropical and "tropical" options?

Indiana Rick's website is inspirational! So many usefulul ideas there. I agree don't give up until you've tried it 3x and tested some tricks!

Mulched here now in my more "gentle" z8b, until I have a backup clump stored to go "cold turkey".

No the impressive Canna 'Durban" = 'Tropicanna' doesn't throw lower red spires!

That's a compact Lobelia 'Starship Red' which has nice contrasting rich green leaves. This Cardinal Flower was easy to grow from seed* (as are Canna) and gets the hummingbirds darting all around to enhance the tropical theme. I like L. 'Vulcan Red' as well to for contrast. Dark maroon leaved and also more compact than L. 'Queen Victoria' with no staking needed.

* After using many over the years, the best seed starting method that I've used over the years is a biodome and sponge block system or similar. Works best with heatmats and bright plant light. Effective, efficient, durable, flexible, and small footprint.

Cheerpeople, thank you for posting this amazing list! It's great to have inspiration for new seeds to try, and I like how you catalogued everything alphabetically as far as seed, cutting, germination, etc. and separated the perennials & annuals.
