It isn't Convolvulus cneorum. That looks totally different. Not least because it never has flowers any other colour than white. BTW, not all Convolvulus are vines, C cneorum being an example. And you were right when you said the flowers looked similar to a bindweed flower, but not when you said 'I'm sure it is no relation'. Evolvulus and Convolvulus are in the same family, Convolvulaceae, as is Ipomoea, Morning Glory. How about Evolvulus nuttallianus? Here is a link that might be useful: E nuttallianus

Does the Abutilon palmerii have gray enough foliage to make the list? I guess it's still pretty green... ? How about Asclepias subulata for accent or gray? And Artemisia x Powis castle - Ok, I know how everyone feels about oleander but I inherited a hedge of petite whites and right now they are beautiful day and night. One to add to your list. Maireana sedifolia or Pearl Bluebush. It's native to Australia and has the most interesting silver/blue foliage. The leaves are about 1/2 inch long and almost succulent-looking and are covered with very short hairs, making it look soft. I had two of these plants at my last house where they received full sun till about 4pm. The plant has a sprawling growth habit to about 4 feet wide and three feet tall. The oldest plant, which was three years in the ground, flowered the spring before I moved. It had tiny inconspicuous tan flowers. Now that I'm in another home, I've planted one on a western exposure about four feet from a block wall.

I honestly find Morning Glories to be more pesky and invasive and aggressive than Bindweeds. I planted Morning Glories in my garden ONCE over a decade ago and decided I didn't want them in there anymore .... A decade later and I'm STILL getting seedlings popping up. When they grow all over over plants with their big, thick leaves, they can end up killing off those plants by blocking access to light. Bindweed are less of a threat in that regard -- particularly in cold zones -- with their much smaller leaves. In my experience, Morning Glories are far more aggressive and grow to far greater lengths than their wild cousins. Their flowers may be prettier, but their growth habits are a pain to deal with -- the one I had covered a 25ft. area even with constant pruning of new growth & was a nightmare to remove in autumn after frost killed it off and it looked all ugly.
