Hi. Even though I tend to agree with Resin's statement about shearing, I think your choice may depend on the desired width of your hedge. Planting 2-3 m (7-10 ft) 'Horizontalis' will give you a wide hedge right from the start, with fairly thick side-branches.If these need cutting back, you may find yourself with a fairly bare hedge. Redwoods appear to be limited by hydraulics rather than nutrients. The Stratosphere Giant for instance, which is located in a drier part of the range shoots up new leads at a comparatively normal rate and then dies back during dry years. So the general height of the tree has been leveled off by its ability to keep itself hydrated but the actual height of the tree in any given year is not constant. And this phenomenon is not a general occurrence, seen among most trees - the Giant hasn't stopped growing with some vigor, it is being killed back. With younger, smaller examples of other kinds of trees as well as the same species the tree would be maintaining a constant increase, except where there was also a circumstance resulting in dying back. It will not be growing to a predetermined height and then remaining frozen there - unlike bamboo culms which do "top out". Cupressus sempervirens 'Glauca' is a synonym of C. sempervirens 'Glauca Stricta', which as the name implies is merely a blue form of C. sempervirens 'Stricta'. An example of the latter growing in Sacramento was 94 ft. tall in 1989. An Italian cypress growing 60 ft. tall in 10 years would have to be growing 6 ft. per year. And so on - these don't grow as fast as eucalypts. If size records for long term plantings of C. sempervirens Tiny Tower ('Monshel') are not in circulation then we don't know how big it gets. Since commercial sources tend to understate tree size development I figure if Monrovia says 30 then it's probably safe to assume 40 or 50. All the more so because C. sempervirens has been known to be long-lived (3,000 years). My selection also is smaller in overall size. An eight-year-old specimen, the oldest known, has achieved a height of 2.1 meters and a width of 34 cm. The nursery has two different dwarf Italian Cypress, The "totem" I looked at before that has the 2 ft spread and 12 to 15ft height and they say is fast growing. The have another dwarf Italian cypress that gas a 3ft spread is "slow" growing and is rated to grow to 20 feet. They say the totem gains height faster because it doesn't put as much energy into creating a robust trunk as the non-totem dwarf. He had the non-totem dwarf as a neater look because branches don't droop the way the totems do and it will hold up to wind better than a totem version. The downside of the non-totem dwarf if that it has a foot wider spread (if that's a problem), it has a slower growth rate and the ultimate height will be roughly 5ft taller. They said the totem grows faster and yet has a lower expected maximum height because it has a shorter lifespan. It doesn't just keep growing to 30+ feet because it's likely to have completed it's lifespan by the time it gets much past 15 feet. Dwarf Italian Cypress.
