Flowering Gum Pest

Hi all

I have one of those flowering gums (Corymbia 'Summer Beauty')and many of the leaves are being eaten by something.

Anyone had a similar problem and therefore may be able to shed some light on what remedial action is necessary?

g'day roy,

there are around 3 leaf eating bugs for gum trees they all look similar to each other but surprisingly have different scientific names (don't have them to hand) they look a bit like an oversize lady bird, our method of treatment as to do an early morn' collectin and drop them into a bottle with some kero' in it same treatment for their larva when you find it.

these bugs can all but denude a tree of foliage but for the main the tree will revive over winter, i think the best control method is to attract the noisy miners into you garden they will take care of the larva and hence the beetle, the honey eaters will also help.

My Gums are being eaten as well. I think it is a Gum leaf skeletoniser, or a Callistemon sawfly.

Can you see the insect on the leaf munching away ?

I would just pick them off, if you can, or let the birds take care of them.

Using chemicals should only be a last resort, in my mind, or avoid using them.

I find "What Garden Pest or Disease is That", Judy McMaugh, a good reference book, for garden insects, and diseases of plants.

pam, its mostly an eastern tree farther north they go (in other words not in the Dakotas), but when i was in Massachusetts they did indeed have spectacular fall color even in a area know for trees with spectacular fall color. I have never seen these trees in the south so i cant comment on their size. Yes it is freezing. It felt like spring one day, even a no-coat day, and then the next day i got frostbite after 5 minutes of walking into the prevailing winds, i don't remember it being this cold for a long time. Its just as Pretty Margaret, I personally think all flowering Gum have beautiful flowers. Mine only have tiny white flowers but they still look good in the Spring when they burst into flower. Cheers..MM.

All leaves of all trees are lost eventually, it's just that the life of any one leaf varies according to species and sometimes to environment -- anything from under 1 year (most deciduous trees) to over 20 years on some araucarias. I think in most eucalypts leaf life is in the 2 to 4 year range. Then they fall, but not all at once.

Flowering Red Gum, sickly with yellowing leaves

Hello, I've recently moved into a rental that has a garden that must have once been spectacular but has been neglected. two medium sized flowering red gums planted near each other that aren't looking too good. The leaves are yellowing and sparse. I'm not sure what the culprit is, but flowering red gums are so beautiful, I'd like to save them if I can. I suspect it's some kind of parasite, but am not sure what, or what to do about it. If anyone has any advice, I'd be super grateful :)

Our flowering gum seems to be making all our bees and flies very docile. They fall to the ground all stunned. Is our tree diseased?
